This position is located within the Agricultural Research Service, Midwest Area, Ames, Iowa.
In this position, you will routinely troubleshoot or repair malfunctions or defects in HVAC equipment and controls and be capable of operating and interpreting information from the BAS to correct operating conditions.
Duties
Welds dissimilar metals and performs sheet metal work related to maintaining HVAC systems.
Follows local mechanical codes, including steam and hot water heating systems.
Works with procurement personnel to help specific special materials and equipment needs.
Maintains accurate records of time and materials used on projects and properly maintains all hand and shop tools.
Requirements
- You must be a US Citizen or US National.
- Males born after 12/31/1959 must be Selective Service registered or exempt.

- Successful completion of one-year probationary period, unless previously served.

While a specific length of time and experience is not required for most Wage Grade positions, you must show through experience and training that you possess the best qualified level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of this position. Qualification requirements emphasize the quality of experience, not necessarily the length. The responses to the questionnaire and your resume should be in significant detail to provide the person rating your application with a good understanding of your ability to do the job, technical knowledge, work, and training experience, etc. (For example You must have the ability to perform the duties of a Maintenance Mechanic, without more than normal supervision (Screen Out). Physical Effort
Work is done on benches, supports, ladders, scaffolds, roof, on catwalks, in modules, manholes, ditches, around fixtures and piping which requires continuous standing, stooping, bending, climbing, working overhead in stretched, cramped and awkward positions.
May lift or carry items weighing up to 75 lb., and on occasion lift items in excess of 75 lb.
Working Conditions
Subject to fumes, sparks, and gases. Subject to injury and continuous exposure to hazards of cuts, bruises, noise, vibrations, burns, dust, dirt and danger from flying chips when using powered and hand tools. Subject to falls from ladders and scaffolds. Work is performed inside and outside under generally favorable conditions but is also required to work outside in all kinds of weather.
Changes clothing provided by the center while at the work duty station. May be required to shower prior to reporting to duty station and/or in accordance with entrance/exit safety protocols for specific areas of the center. Must wear a full -face respirator when working in biological control areas; restrictions of facial hair may be imposed for proper use of personal protective equipment.
May be called in nights and weekends to make or assist in emergency repairs. May be required to work on rotating shifts to ensure 24 hours Utility Plant coverage.
