About the Position:
Serves as Health Technician (Occupational) performing duties in support of the Medical Treatment Facility (MTF) and its geographic area of responsibility. This position is located with the Lyster Army Medical Center, Fort Novosel, AL.

Duties
Perform a variety of administrative functions, including documenting and maintaining patient and office Occupational Health records and files.
Conduct or participate in Occupational Health investigations and inspections at employee worksites/workplaces.
Take employee medical work histories.
Conduct Occupational Health medical screenings, complete routine examinations and standardized tests [including hearing, vision, spirometry, knowledge of tuberculin skin testing and screening procedures, and electrocardiogram (EKG) testing].
Counsel and educate employees regarding OH test results and related OH patient information.
Operate and maintain a variety of medical instruments/equipment needed to conduct Occupational Health tests.
Use automated equipment and databases to complete tasks.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- A one-year probationary period is required if the selectee has not previously met this requirement.
- Selectees will be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
- This position is a Testing Designated Position subject to pre-employment screening and random drug testing. Selectees will be required to consent to participation in random drug urinalysis testing.
- A pre-placement medical examination is required.
- Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain certification in Basic Life Support (BLS).
- Must be certified in all medical testing/screening OH functions within six (6) months after appointment.
- Must pass Occupational Hearing Conservation or equivalent training and receive DOEHRS-HC training certificate after attending certification or recertification workshop within six(6)months after appointment.
- Must possess and maintain a valid stateside driver's license.
- Must attend and successfully complete the certification curriculum specified and approved by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) in Spirometry within six (6) months after appointment.
- May be required to operate a military Transportation Motor Pool (TMP) vehicle.
- Moderate to heavy lifting up to 50 pounds is required.
- Incumbent must be able to obtain and maintain certification in cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
- Must hear well enough to auscultate a blood pressure.

GS-6 Specialized Experience:
One year of specialized experience which includes assisting with various screenings, such as vision, vital signs, spirometry, audiometry, and electrocardiograms (EKGs); scheduling patient check-in appointments; utilizing an automated medical information system; AND working with Health care personnel with limited supervision. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).

Education:
A half year (i.e., 9 semester hours) of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience:
A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 9. Add the two percentages.

FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
