Duties
Conducts routine maintenance and repair of historic trails, grounds and structures requiring the use of a variety of trade practices associated with more than one of the following occupations: carpentry, masonry, vegetation management, roofing and motor vehicle operation.
Conducts the stabilization, maintenance, and repair of prehistoric and historic masonry structures, ruins and sites.
Carries out the maintenance and rehabilitation of the park cultural landscape through vegetation management.
Removing deteriorated roofing materials in preparation for reroofing and assisting with restoring and stabilizing roofs
Identify hazards, reporting on-the-job injuries and safety violations in accordance with regulations, and periodically inspecting workplaces.
This is a term position (more than 1 year) with an initial appointment expecting to last at least 13 months but may be extended up to a total of nine years, or more based on any changes to regulations governing the number of years term appointments may last, without further competition. Term positions do not convey permanent status in the Federal service.
The National Park Service retains the right to extend the duration of this appointment after selection and/or appointment, based on changes to the regulation governing the number of years term appointments may last. This change, which may be made at the agency's sole discretion and without further competition, shall not be construed or interpreted as the granting of a right to a selectee or employee to such an extension. No extension to a term appointment shall be granted to a selectee/employee to an amount of time that exceeds the maximum number of years authorized under any present or current regulation, unless such regulation expressly allows such action.
Area Information
Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail (ALKA) is located on Hawaiʻi Island in the State of Hawaii. Ala Kahakai NHT is a 175 mile trail coastal network of trails that stretches from the northern tip of the Island around the west side, around South Point, and through Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Ala Kahakai NHT duty station for the Trail is located in Kailua-Kona on the Island of Hawai'i. It is located 2,500 airline miles from the continental United States and over 250 miles from Honolulu on the island of Oahu, the major business, government, and industrial supply center for the state.
Special Consideration: The island of Hawai'i, including Sections of the Ala Kahakai NHT, is subject to high concentrations of volcanic fumes, especially sulfur dioxide gasses. The fumes are known to be hazardous to the unborn fetus, and persons with heart and respiratory problems. Long-term effects on healthy persons are not known. Hawaii ranks No. 1 as the most expensive state based on monthly household bills. Hawaii residents spend an average of $3,091 each month on utilities, rent/mortgage and other common household costs. Residents spend 45% above the national average. The median household income in Hawaii is $94,814, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
The salary range given includes base pay and locality pay, you will also receive a 3.15% cost of living allowance, subject to change.
Qualifications
SELECTIVE FACTOR: This position requires working knowledge of traditional Hawaiian trades, dry-set masonry, pole and lashed building construction; knowledge of indigenous, Polynesian introduced, and invasive plant species; knowledge of traditional nomenclature for elements of traditional structures; awareness of traditional cultural practices.Candidates who do not meet this requirement by close of this announcement will receive no further consideration for this position.
