This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.
About the Position: The installation rests in the beautiful 'hill and lake' country of Central Texas between Killeen and Copperas Cove.
Duties
Repair and maintain air conditioning field units.
Diagnosis and troubleshoot systems to locate malfunctions.
Install, maintain, repair, recognize the cause of faulty equipment.
Service and repair evaporators, condensers and receivers; repack valves, replace motors, belts and pulleys; lubricate moving parts; replace and clean filters; bleed systems; test for leaks and excessive load conditions.
Overhaul, modify and relocate equipment on various industrial and special purpose air-conditioning and cooling unit systems (see below).
Equipment includes centrifugal chiller, air-conditioning and refrigeration equipment; also, special purpose equipment/facilities such as humidity chambers, chilled water systems, central energy plants.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315. While probationary the incumbent can be terminated with limited appeal rights.
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
- The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
- This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 25% of the time.
- This position requires incumbent to work an on-call work schedule to respond to after-hours emergencies. This may include, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.

However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.
Selective Placement Factor: This position requires the incumbent to possess and maintain a CHLOROFLUOROCARBON CHEMICALS (CFC) CERTIFICATION TYPE UNIVERSAL as required by Section 608 of the clean air act, 1990 EPA mandatory technician certification.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic ~ without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform common Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic tasks. I can repair and recognize the cause of faulty equipment on various industrial and/or special purpose air-conditioning and cooling unit systems. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
Physical Effort: Mechanic frequently carries and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 50 pounds. Repairs and installations are made from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms. Work is frequently performed in hard-to-reach places; therefore, stooping, stretching, bending, and kneeling are often for long periods of time.
Working Conditions: Work is performed inside and outside, on top of buildings, in drafty attic spaces, and in cramped areas with low overheads. Work areas are frequently dirty and greasy; variable temperatures occur when working in cold storage rooms or climatic test chambers. Subject to cuts, bruises, burns, and electrical shock and the possibility of respiratory disorders due to inhalation of refrigerant gases. Protective clothing and facemasks may be occasionally worn when there is a possibility of risk. The incumbent of this position is on occasion exposed to toxic chemicals of various kinds, fibrous glass, and extreme heat in confined spaces and working areas. This exposure involves hazards, physical hardship, and working conditions that are likely of an unusual nature.
