This position is part of the National Archives and Records Administration in Research Services Central Office. The Archivists are responsible for access review, description, arrangement, preservation, automation development and maintenance, and reference service on textual, non-textual, and electronic records. The incumbent will carry out complex professional assignments involving internal and external communications and various archival functions.
Duties
As an ARCHIVIST, you will:
Independently work with staff to provide guidance regarding recordkeeping practices and the responsibility to transfer their records to NARA.
Perform line-by-line review of records pursuant to the provisions of the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), making final release decisions relating to security classification, personal privacy, law enforcement issues, and other relevant access statutes.
Carry out complex professional assignments involving internal and external communications, web pages, social media, and other related activities.
Perform necessary automation work relating to the records of the Program.
Provide expert reference consultation according to reference protocols and procedures internally and externally.
Carry out complex professional assignments involving delivery of advisory services to federal agencies; accessioning and processing of records; protecting records and ensuring their proper storage, handling, conservation; and delivery of both pro-active and re-active reference service that demonstrates broad knowledge of holdings.
Qualifications
You must meet the following requirements within 30 days of the closing date of this announcement.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: For the GS-13, you must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position includes:
Interacting with internal and external stakeholders to manage frequently changing priorities, as well as developing relationships and collaborating in a team environment
AND
Demonstrating expertise in automation innovations, which may include the ability to create and maintain electronic tracking and descriptive systems to comply with access requirements, and performing archival functions on accessioned records in electronic format
AND
Providing guidance on archival records regarding archival holdings, disposition standards, archival value and/or reallocation of records
In addition to the above requirements, you must meet the following time-in-grade requirement, if applicable (as defined in 5 CFR 300, Subpart F):
For the GS-13, you must have been at the GS-12level for 52 weeks.
Education
Individual Occupational Requirement:
Bachelor's degree in archival science or bachelor's degree with a major that includes 18 semester hours in archival science, history and/or in political science or government, and 12 semester hours in one or any combination of the following: archival science, history, American civilization, economics, political science, public administration, or government.
OR
Combination of education and experience - at least 30 semester hours that included courses as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
The education generally must be from an accredited (or pre-accredited) college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
