Job opening: Carpentry Worker

Salary: $30 - 36 per hour

This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. About the Position: Hawaii has many outdoor activities all year round including surfing, paddling, diving, fishing, and hiking.

Duties

Perform construction, installation, repair and modification to wood and wood substitute structures and items. Apply general knowledge of wood, composite materials, wood substitutes and wood working techniques. Work with standard measurements and specifications to complete carpentry tasks. Paint structures and signs. Pour and finish concrete and plaster work. Lay linoleum, counter tops and tiles. Fabricate cement forms.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Incumbent must be able to obtain and keep current a valid state driver's license and any installation and/or DOD requirement for the type vehicle being operated.
  • Employee is subject to be called back to work during non-duty hours to respond to emergencies and make repairs. Employee will have his/her name on a call out roster and will provide their phone number for the roster.
  • Incumbent must obtain within six (6) months of appointment and maintain a forklift operator license.
  • Mission Essential: Incumbent is required to report for duty during inclement weather, Natural Disasters, and other emergency situations and may be required to remain on duty after the official shift ends.
  • This position requires 10% temporary duty travel (TDY).
  • This position requires a pre-employment physical and physical annually.

Qualifications

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Carpentry Worker ~ without more than normal supervision. Ability to do the work of a(n) Carpentry Worker ~ without more than normal supervision; perform common carpentry tasks utilizing blueprints, sketches and diagrams to install pre-planned framing and partitions of wood or fabricated material; use pattern, spacing and techniques for nailing, fastening, bracing, splicing and cleating, and use standard joints and grooves; use basic shop arithmetic to fit and measure boards or sheets of material; use templates and precut or preplanned materials to complete assigned carpentry projects. I perform surface prep and painting of various materials and structures. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Physical Effort: Employee works in shops and at job sites. Strenuous physical exertion is often required. Employee may lift and move materials up to 40 pounds, unassisted, and occasionally lifts or moves heavier items with the assistance of lifting devices or other workers. Employee is required to stand, stoop, and bend. Kneeling, climbing on ladders, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions and where parts of the system are in hard-to-reach places. Work is frequently done from ladders, scaffolding and platforms. Working Conditions: Employee is exposed to moderate or high noise levels, sawdust, glue fumes, and hazards associated with woodworking and related power equipment when performing work in the shop area. Work at job sites exposes employee to weather conditions and the hazards of working on and around scaffolds and ladders. Employee is subject to cuts, bruises and contusions. May be required to work in confined areas such as crawl spaces and attics, which may be dusty and dirty. Protective devices such as but not limited to ear plugs, safety glasses, respirators, gloves, hard hat and safety shoes are required. Long trousers or coveralls and shirt or tee shirt with sleeves are worn. Responds to emergency calls after regular working hours.
