About the Position: Serving as the staff specialist primarily in the field of botany/biology/ecology.

Duties
Identifying a comprehensive range of plant species and plant community's indicative of wetland versus non-wetland habitats.
Providing advice and/or suggestions for interim restoration measures to maintain environmental quality during the investigation.
Completing jurisdictional determinations and wetland delineations for projects that are of a controversial, problematic, or sensitive nature.
Documenting jurisdictional determinations by creating a map or maps of the area, and the conclusions reached regarding those areas.
Formulating and/or recommending policy changes to long range planning efforts in the regulatory program.
Serving as a specialist on environmental issues related to violations of Section 404 of the Clean Water Act and Section 10 of the Rivers and Harbors Act.
Documenting the quantity and quality of wetlands harmed by Clean Water Act violations in sensitive areas.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.

- This is a term position to last 1 year, 1 day.
- This position is subject to a one-year trial period.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Basic Requirement for a Biologist:
A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.
OR
B. Combination of Education and Experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Basic Requirement for Botanist
A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in botany; or basic plant science that included at least 24 semester hours in botany.
OR
B. Combination of Education and Experience: Courses equivalent to a major in botany or basic plant science that included at least 24 semester hours in botany, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Basic Requirement for Ecologist:
Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in biology, or a related field of science underlying ecological research that included at least 30 semester hours in basic and applied biological sciences. These hours must have included at least 9 semester hours in ecology, and 12 semester hours in physical and mathematical sciences.
In addition to meeting one of the basic requirements above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:
One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS - 11 grade level in the Federal service which includes:1 ) Overseeing and coordinating regional wetland delineation requests and provides support for the Regulatory Division, 2) Using extensive knowledge of plant ecology to assess and delineate wetlands for sensitive or controversial projects, 3) Supporting the regulatory program through the execution of programmatic initiatives, and 4) Providing guidance and/or interpreting complex environmental documents related to violations to investigators and less experienced members of the section and branch.

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-11).
