You will serve as a researcher in the Human Systems Integration Division performing professional scientific and engineering work to understand human interaction with aerospace technology. The work requires systematic, critical, intensive investigation directed toward discovering, disseminating, and applying new or expanded knowledge. Research includes, but is not limited to, aircraft simulator studies and is conducted collaboratively with other scientists and engineers.

Duties

Serves as a researcher focused on the design and development of advanced systems to support aeronautics and space research based on the application of human factors and human-computer interaction theories and methodologies. Supports the design and development of next generation experimental and simulation facilities, application of human-system integration, human-computer interaction, cognitive psychology, human factors, perception research, and experimental methods. Supports statistical analysis and computer programming to conduct research on complex human automation interaction issues arising from the introduction of next-generation autonomy technologies into the national airspace. Creates new or substantially improved end items in aerospace and/or aeronautical equipment, systems, materials, processes, procedures and techniques. Supports the coordination, configuration and preparation of experiments and simulations on future air transportation concepts. Works with a team of researchers and developers to evaluate the proper functioning of human in-the-loop simulation capabilities and integrated components for aeronautics and space domains. Validates execution of software requirements, focusing on usability to simulate the airspace operations of interest. Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Education Requirement (in the Education section below), to qualify for this position you must meet the requirements below. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work. NASA utilizes OPM-approved qualification and rating requirements specific for Aerospace Technology (AST) positions which recognizes NASA's unique aerospace work. The specific qualifications and minimum education requirements are further described below and within the education section of the job announcement. To qualify for GS-11, you must have: a) One year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 level: Conducting simulator studies to evaluate aerospace technology with regard to human factors considerations; Performing general manned system studies to further characterize and define human factors requirements; Analyzing results from human factors evaluation tests. OR b) Completed all requirements for a master's or equivalent graduate degree in an appropriate field OR c) Have an equivalent combination of experience and graduate study as discussed in a) and b) above Your resume must include a clear and detailed narrative description, in your own words, of how you meet the required specialized experience. Required college majors for applicants qualifying on the basis of graduate education only: a. Major study in biology (botany, zoology, biophysics, radiation biology, biochemistry, microbiology, physiology, toxicology), or in behavioral science (experimental, physiological or clinical psychology) or other appropriate field of life science, including or supplemented by at least 20 semester hours of physical science or engineering (undergraduate or graduate), or experience sufficient to provide a basis for understanding, use and interpretation of the highly specialized ground-based or in-flight measurement, environmental control, vehicle control and other equipment required for manned or organism bearing aerospace flights and voyages; or b. Major study in an appropriate engineering or physical science, including or supplemented by at least 20 semester hours of physiology, experimental or physiological psychology, or other appropriate life science, or experience in biotechnology, human factors engineering or other appropriate life science field.

Education

Basic Education Requirement: You must have successfully completed a bachelor's degree with a major in one of the following:
a) Engineering from a college or university that has ABET accredited engineering programs
b) Physical Science, Mathematics, Life Science or other field of Science
c) Computer Science that included 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours of course work in any combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science with at least half of those hours in mathematics and statistics courses that included differential and integral calculus; and that provided an in-depth knowledge of theoretical and practical applications of computer science, including digital computer system architecture and system software organization, the representation and transformation of information structures, and the theoretical models for such representations and transformations.

If you did not complete a qualifying bachelor's degree, you may be eligible if you have obtained a graduate degree in an AST qualifying field, as listed above.

Degrees in engineering technology are not considered qualifying for this position.
