About the Position: Responsible for managing and executing the Army Command History Program. The program consists of the oversight and coordination of the Army-wide historical effort of all Army command history offices, uniformed IMA Field Historians, and unit historical officers. Evaluates and ensures that Army command history offices comply with professional historical standards, conducting or overseeing staff assistance visits as necessary.

Duties

Performs the full range of administrative and technical supervisory duties. Interviews and recommends selection of candidates for positions, promotions and reassignments. Plan and schedule ongoing production-oriented work on a quarterly and annual basis, or direct assignments of similar duration. Decide the methodologies to use in achieving work goals and objectives, and in determining other management strategies. Reviews the collection by Army historians of all operational historical documents and oral histories related to current operations. Coordinates Army historical coverage of current contingency operations. Incumbent oversees the plans, sets priorities, and establishes work schedules for all foreign official military history institute contact and exchange, to include academic seminars and conferences.

  • Requires business travel 25% of the time.
  • This position is covered by the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Program. The incumbent is required to sign a DA Form 5019-R ) and must pass urinalysis testing, as required prior to appointment and periodically thereafter.

Basic Requirement for Historian: Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in history; or related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history. OR Combination of Education and Experience: Courses equivalent to a major in history, or a major in a related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history, plus appropriate experience or additional education. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes : 1.) providing detailed historical support to an organization; 2.) rendering expert level interpretation and conclusions concerning military history inquiries or proposed projects; 3.) assimilating military history research results and written contributions into a coherent whole; and 4.) developing significant historical products. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-13). You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Ability to lead or superviseCommunicationsTechnical Competence Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-13).
