Duties

You will plan, initiate and complete requests for habitat maintenance, improvement and development projects. You will establish wildlife clearings, plant wildlife plant materials, seed forest access roads, support outreach activities, erect information or warning signs, maintain artificial nest box programs, and manage freshwater ponds for game fish. You will develop or adapt materials and methods for observing fish and wildlife, collecting field data, performing surveys, conducting tests or analysis, maintaining records, compiling data and preparing reports. You will implement water chemistry testing, fertilization, fish stocking, and shoreline mowing in freshwater ponds managed for recreational fishing. You will serve as a member of a prescribed burning crew responsible for wildland fire incident management activities as assigned.

  • You will be required to obtain and maintain certification at the Wildland Firefighter Type I or Type II level (minimum) and pass an annual work capacity test to participate in collateral duties as a Wildlands Firefighter.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • You will be required to complete training, obtain, and maintain a government credit card for travel and travel-related purchases.
  • This position is eligible for part time, substantial or ad-hoc telework at the discretion of management.

Qualifications

GS-06: In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Applying basic wildlife biology concepts, principles, practices and methodology to plan and coordinate game and non-game wildlife projects; preparing written and oral communications for scientific and non-scientific audiences; and utilizing web-based systems for data entry, administrative processes, and reporting. GS-05: In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-04 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Assisting wildlife biologists with field work pertaining to wildlife management to ensure compliance with state and federal laws and regulations; assisting with field investigations to provide expedited assistance with reported biological problems; and entering species observations into a wildlife access database. Education

In lieu of the specialized experience listed in the Qualifications section, you may qualify with the following education or combination of both education and experience:

GS-05: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics. At least 6 semester hours of courses must have been directly related to the position to be filled. The successful completion of a full course of study of at least 12 months in a school for clinical laboratory technicians may be substituted for the 1 year of specialized experience required at the GS-5 level for positions involving microbiology and biochemistry technician work.

NOTE: Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above GS-5 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position.
