The Utilization and Life Sciences Office (UBA00) at the Kennedy Space Center (KSC) is seeking an individual with experience in both project management & project science that will utilize that expertise for NASA Space Biology payload design and payloads built for space flight at KSC and conducted on the International Space Station (ISS) and other future space exploration platforms.

Duties

Serves as a project manager and scientist for biological science projects and research by providing technical management for the planning, development, budgeting, integration, and implementation of life sciences projects. Serves as project manager and scientist for life sciences capability and fundamental biology research for customers such as International Space Station, Mars Campaign Office, Space Technology Mission Directorate, and Science Mission Directorate. Supports projects focused on plant growth and space crop production. Supports projects that include microbial, plant and animal research which require experience in one or more areas of plant biology, microbiology, molecular biology, cellular biology, and/or plant physiology research. Represents KSC science capabilities and projects with other NASA centers and at major technical/scientific meetings. Includes technical material for publication in professional journals, NASA publications, and presentations at scientific meetings. Acts as an interface with internal/external scientists and principal investigators with mission development, execution, close-out of studies, experiments, and projects, to include, in ground and flight research activities from launch through landing. Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Education Requirement (in the Education section below), to qualify for this position you must meet the requirements below. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work. NASA utilizes OPM-approved qualification and rating requirements specific for Aerospace Technology (AST) positions which recognizes NASA's unique aerospace work. The specific qualifications and minimum education requirements are further described below and within the education section of the job announcement. To qualify at the GS-13 level, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level: Conducting theoretical and/or experimental research on physical and/or biological processes of living organisms and systems as related to space life sciences or controlled environments; Performing work in the areas of microbial and plant research which requires expertise in one or more areas of plant biology, microbiology, molecular biology, cellular biology, and/or plant physiology research; Working with biological payloads designed and built for flight to the International Space Station and/or other spaceflight platforms which includes knowledge of space related biological responses and conducting related research. Education

Basic Education Requirement: You must have successfully completed a bachelor's degree with a major in one of the following:

a) Engineering from a college or university that has ABET accredited engineering programs
b) Physical Science, Mathematics, Life Science or other field of Science
c) Computer Science that included 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours of course work in any combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science with at least half of those hours in mathematics and statistics courses that included differential and integral calculus; and that provided an in-depth knowledge of theoretical and practical applications of computer science, including digital computer system architecture and system software organization, the representation and transformation of information structures, and the theoretical models for such representations and transformations.

If you did not complete a qualifying bachelor's degree, you may be eligible if you have obtained a graduate degree in an AST qualifying field, as listed above.

Degrees in engineering technology are not considered qualifying for this position.
