Duties

You will operate the engine and associated equipment on board small craft. You will be responsible for the containment and recovery of oil and other similar waste that are spilled in the Sewell's Point Area. You will plot a course for navigation and make correction as conditions warrant. You will operate portable pumps, portable generators and light plants, in support of recovery and/or spill operations.

Requirements

  • Must be a US Citizen.
  • Must be determined suitable for federal employment.

  • You will be required to obtain and maintain a current valid United States Commercial B Drivers License (CDL) with Tank (N) or Tank/Hazardous Materials (X) and Air break endorsements.
  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or fail the test. You will be subject to random testing.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • This is a Mission Essential position. You will be required to ensure organization or facility continuity of operations and/or completion of tasks that are considered essential to the mission designated by a local or command decision.
  • Must be able to become CPR and respirator certified.
  • You must qualify for medical examiner's certificate (ATA card) to receive the required government license to operate government vehicles.

Qualifications

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the elements and screen out listed below. This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: 1) Understanding of all types of oil & an in-depth understanding of the details and techniques used to recover each of the several types of oils ranging from heavy oil used aboard naval and commercial vessels to highly Volatile aviation fuels; 2) Knowing technical aspects of recovery of oil from water as well as land; 3) Comprehending knowledge of the maritime protocols including navigation lights, fog signals and day shapes appropriate for various conditions and proper action of stand-on and give-way vessels, good seamanship practices and current U.S. Coast Guard regulations pertaining to safe boat operations; 4) Knowledge of vessel capabilities and local wind and sea condition to determine when to cancel scheduled tows; 5) Knowledgeable in operating and maintaining various portable equipment such as pneumatic pumps, gasoline driven pumps, diesel pumps, portable generators, light plants, stake trucks, pick-up trucks, forklift and various sized vacuum trucks ranging from 3, 000 gallons, capacity to 6,000 allow capacity.
