This position is located with the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Navajo Region in Farmington, New Mexico. The incumbent supports the Road Maintenance Program of the Branch of Road Maintenance by performing a variety of general labor duties. NOTE: THE PAY FLEXIBILITIES OF A RECRUITMENT BONUS MAY BE AUTHORIZED PENDING AVAILABILITY OF FUNDS AND MANAGEMENT APPROVAL.

Duties

Provides a variety of general labor duties maintaining roads, bridges, transit, and transportation facilities in accordance with Federal, State, Tribal and Local laws as applicable. Performs routine preventative maintenance and emergency service on equipment and power tools such as: performing equipment and vehicle walk-around inspections prior to use; retrieving parts from shop for the field. Performs road patrol, drainage structure inspections, surface inspections, traffic control inspections. Submits accurate daily maintenance activity reports reflecting work performed, equipment utilization, and hours traveled to and from duty station, and materials utilized to accurately determine maintenance cost for program accountability. Works in a team environment (crew) to perform maintenance activities such as: cattle guard clean-out and repair; crack sealing; culvert cleaning and replacement; fence maintenance; guardrail maintenance; pothole patching. Other Laborer duties as assigned.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Job Qualifications System for Trades and Labor Occupations (X-118C, Qualification Standard Handbook) will be used in determining applicants' qualifications. There is no specific length of training or experience required; however, you must be able to demonstrate through the experience shown in your written resume and your responses to the Occupational Questionnaire that you possess the competencies to perform the duties of this position without more than normal supervision. ELEMENT #25-A: Work Practices (includes keeping things neat, clean, and in order). ELEMENT #75-B: Ability To Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprinting readying) ELEMENT #81: Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment. ELEMENT #86: Dexterity and Safety. Preference in filling vacancies is given to qualified Indian candidates in accordance with the Indian Preference Act of 1934 (title 25, USC Section 472). All qualification requirements must be met by the closing date of this announcement. Merit Promotion candidates must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the announcement closing date.
