This position is located with the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Alaska Region, Office of the Regional Director, Division of Environmental and Cultural Resources, Branch of Regional Archeology in Anchorage, Alaska. This is a Bargaining Unit position, for more information see What are bargaining units? Duties

As an Archaeologist, your typical work assignments and/or responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following: Perform archeological Section 106 compliance surveys of Alaska Native restricted lands involved in Bureau and Departmental projects and actions. Identifies and evaluates historic properties for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places. Conducts Section 106 consultation with other Federal and State governmental agencies, Tribal organizations, landowners, and the public. Prepare organized and comprehensive written reports on all surveyed lands. Manages artifact and collection indexing and conducts laboratory analysis of collected material.

Qualifications

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS: (OPM Operating Manual, Qualification Standards for Professional and Scientific Positions; and Individual Occupational Requirements for GS-0193: Archeology Series). BASIC REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL GRADES: A. 1. Degree: which includes three (3) semester hours of each in the following course areas: History of archeology; archeology of a major geographical area such as North America or Africa; regional archeology; archeological cultures, or sites in a specific part or portion of a major geographical area to acquire or develop a foundation for regional specialization for professional development; theory and methods of archeology, including but not limited to, typology, classification, sampling, cultural evolution, diffusion, dating, and analytical techniques; and archeological field school, to provide a basic understanding of theoretical and practical approaches to research design implementation, field preservation techniques, and report preparation by participation in actual field work; AND six semester hours of related course work in: geography, geology, or cultural geology; history, historiography, or historical archeology; environmental studies; scientific writing (nonfiction English composition); and/or surveying AND archeological field school. OR 2. Related curriculum - Degree in anthropology (with emphasis on ethnology, physical anthropology, or scientific linguistics), history, American studies, or related discipline may be accepted as satisfying in full the educational requirements, provided the curriculum supplies the academic course work sufficiently similar to that required in A.1 (including archeological field school). OR B. Combination of education and experience - college-level education or training that provided knowledge equivalent to that described in A. above, plus appropriate technical experience or additional education. OR C. Experience - four years of archeological work experience which demonstrated that the applicant has acquired a thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional archeology. The work experience must have included archeology field experience, which may include that gained in an archeological field school. Field experience should include a combination of professional experience in archeological survey, excavation, laboratory analysis and preparation of written materials. ADDITIONAL EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: In addition to meeting the basic entry level qualification requirements, applicants must have the following: SPECIALIZED GS-07: In addition to meeting the basic education requirement, I have at least 1 year of full-time specialized experience or the equivalent, comparable to at least the GS-7 in the Federal Service (obtained in either the public or private sector). This experience must consist of archeological and historical archival research and analysis; correlation of varied archeological and historical data pertaining to environment, settlement patterns and subsistence practices; field identification and testing of archeological or historic sites; mitigation through excavation for data recovery, and preparation of reports based on the conclusion of findings, OR Education: 1 year of graduate level education or superior academic achievement. SPECIALIZED GS-09: In addition to meeting the basic education requirement, I have at least 1 year of full-time specialized experience or the equivalent, comparable to at least the GS-7 in the Federal Service (obtained in either the public or private sector). This experience must include the following: planning and carrying out the Bureau's cultural resources management and NEPA programs; fulfill and execute the Federal government's legal responsibilities related to cultural resources used by the tribes for sustenance, cultural enrichment and economic development and support; and promote the conservation, development and wise use of these resources for the maximum benefit of Indian people, OR Education: Master's degree or 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree OR LL.B. or J.D., must be related to position. All qualification requirements must be met by the closing date of this announcement. Merit Promotion candidates must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the announcement closing date. Preference in filling vacancies is given to qualified Indian candidates in accordance with the Indian Preference Act of 1934 (title 25, USC Section 472). Additional selections may be made from this announcement if identical vacancies occur in the same location within 90 days from the closing date.

One academic year of graduate education is considered to be the number of credits hours your graduate school has determined to represent one academic year of full-time study. Such study may have been performed on a full-time or part-time basis. If you cannot obtain your graduate school's definition of one year of graduate study, 18 semester hours (or 27 quarter hours) should be considered as satisfying the requirement for one year of full-time graduate study.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must send a Certificate of Foreign Equivalency with your transcript in order to receive credit for that education which shows the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
