About the Position: The U.S. Military Academy, West Point, NY is an academic institution located in the Hudson River Valley, 50 miles from New York City. The historic site is the oldest continuously occupied military post in America. West Point is a self-contained city with housing, a Department of Public Works, libraries, hospital, fire department, chapels, and restaurants. Employees have access to Eisenhower Hall Theater, Hudson Valley's performing arts center, and recreational facilities.
Duties
Provide access to a wide range of information resources for library users.
Create and maintain Machine-Readable Cataloging (MARC) and non-MARC bibliographic and authority metadata for library resources.
Create, maintain, and monitor batch processes for bulk metadata management.
Employ various formats, standards and/or Resource Description and Access (RDA) (and predecessors) for appropriate subject headings and classification, such as, OCLC Bibliographic Formats and Standards.
Review and revise output from division colleagues.
Assist with configuration of metadata presentation in the library’s discovery system.
Responsible for one or more specialized forms of material, including manuscripts, rare books, archives, audiovisual materials, serials, and non-English language materials.

- This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations.
- Appointment to this position is subject to a one-year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.

Basic Requirement for Librarian:
The Librarian occupation has specific education requirements which apply to all positions. To qualify, applicants must meet one of the basic requirements listed below.
a. Completion of 1 full academic year of graduate study in library science in an accredited college or university, in addition to completion of all work required for a bachelor's degree.

b. A total of at least 5 years of a combination of college-level education, training, and experience. To qualify on this basis, the applicant must establish conclusively that the education, training, and experience provided a knowledge and understanding of the theories, principles, and techniques of professional librarianship; a knowledge of literature resources; and the knowledge and abilities essential for providing effective library and information services.
In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:
GS-09
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience, which includes: 1) Providing general library and/or information services to end users; 2) Organizing library materials; AND 3) Maintaining various library materials, such as, archival, rare, and/or special collections. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).

Education: 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education or master's in library science or equivalent graduate degree related to the position.

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience, which includes: 1) Providing general library and/or information services to end users, to include, research assistance; 2) Organizing library materials; 3) Maintaining various library materials, such as, archival, rare, and/or special collections; AND 4) Deliver database and/or record-keeping system instructions and/or problem solving techniques to meet the needs of library patrons. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09).

Education: 3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education in library science or doctoral degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) related to the position.

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages.
