This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. About the Position: This position is located with the Clinical Laboratory at Eglin AFB, Florida. A recruitment or relocation incentive may be authorized.

Duties

Receives tissue, body fluid and smear specimens. Prepares slides of tissue and cell blocks by orientation, fixation, decalcification, dehydration, embedding, sectioning, staining, and mounting for the pathologist's study. Performs a wide variety of special histology, cytology, and hematology stains for specific cells or organisms. Supervises the quality assurance activities of Anatomic Pathology. Monitors improvements and deficiencies and takes appropriate corrective action. Collects, performs, evaluates and monitors the performance of procedures using available techniques in accordance with predefined procedures. Reviews quality control data to evaluate instrumentation and technical procedures and takes appropriate action for correction.

Requirements

  • Required to lift up to 40lbs. in the regular performance of duties
  • This position requires Basic Life Support (BLS) training certification from, or in accordance with, the American Heart Association and American Red Cross.
  • This position is subject to a background investigation to determine your suitability for Federal employment.
  • Tuberculosis (TB): This position requires the incumbent to have Tuberculosis testing.
  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Must successfully complete pre-placement and annual medical examinations.
  • This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) subject to applicant testing and random drug testing.
  • This position is subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations. Applicants tentatively selected for this position will be required to sign a statement consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations, unless exempted by a licensed physician.
  • Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes demonstrated/documented work in staining, embedding of tissue specimens; microtomy of tissue; performing special stains; AND preparing sample slides. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06). Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you may qualify if you meet the definitions below: Education Substitution: One full year of graduate education in Histotechnology, Human Anatomy, Biomedical Science or other field directly related to this position (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.). OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of graduate education by 18. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify.(Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
