Duties
Serve as a fully trained member of a firefighting crew responding to emergencies involving fire, emergency medical services, hazardous material and other protection of life and property.
Actively participates in training sessions as scheduled and/or directed by Lead or Supervisory Firefighters when required.
Serve as Driver/Operator of motorized fire apparatus as required.
Operate all fire fighting vehicle auxiliary equipment.
Alternates as hose person, ladder person, hydrant person, rescue person, nozzle person, salvage person, or hand lineperson.
Administers emergency medical care and treatment for illnesses and injuries of occupational and non-occupational origin for soldiers, dependents, civilian employees, and visitors.
Determines the proper pressure for the distance agent is required to be delivered.
Directs and coordinates operations in firefighting tactics until relieved by a senior fire officer.
Monitors and recommends corrective actions as necessary for improving lower echelon personnel performance.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires the completion of pre-employment and periodic subsequent medical examination in accordance with DoDM 6055.06 to ensure continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- This position has a requirement to lift up to 45 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
- The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. Detection of the presence of drugs is warranted. This is a drug testing designated position.
- This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
- This position requires the employee to use personal protective equipment provided by the employer.
- This position requires the incumbent to wear the prescribed uniform and/or personal protective equipment while on duty.
- This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. Employee shifts are rotated on a regularly scheduled basis; 48-hour rotating shifts with a work schedule of 144 hours per pay period.
- Due to the nature of this position, employees are required to work both planned and unscheduled overtime. This position performs, as required, mutual aid support to local fire departments.
- The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
- This position requires successful completion of an annual Job Performance Test.
- This position requires the incumbent to conform to the requirements set-forth in the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1500, Fire Department Occupational Health and Safety Program.
- The incumbent must be able to obtain and maintain a current valid state motor vehicle operator license to operate vehicles up to one ton.
- Incumbent must maintain current Basic Life Support for the Healthcare Provider (CPR and AED) card and valid National Registry Emergency Medical Technician - Basic license.
- Incumbent must be certified within the DOD Fire and Emergency Services Fire Fighter Certification system (in accordance with DoD Instruction 6055.6 and DoD Manual 6055.6M .
- The incumbent is responsible for assisting in emergency action involving hazardous waste.

Experience and/or Education Requirements:
GS 04 Grade Level:One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) Assisting firefighting crew responding to emergencies and 2) Performing general housekeeping of the fire station. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-03).
OR
Education: Successfully completed two years of education above the high school level in an accredited college or university in Fire Training, Fire Science, or other related fields of study. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education by 60. Add the two percentages.
GS-05 Grade Level: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) Experience performing firefighting functions and 2) Experience performing regular maintenance and minor repairs on fire equipment. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the Federal service, (GS-04).

Education: Successful completion of four years of education above the high school level in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's degree with major study in Fire Science, Fire Training, or other related fields of study. (NOTE: You MUST attach a copy of your transcripts.)

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. (To compute the percentage, divide you total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then divide your undergraduate semester hours by 18. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
GS-06 Grade Level: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) Experience controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; 2) Experience with rescue operations; 3) Experience in detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards; and 4) Experience assessing patient's conditions to administer basic treatment. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the Federal service, (GS-05).
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job at the GS-06 grade level, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
GS-07: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) Experience controlling or extinguishing fires performing rescue operations; (2) Experience operating fire communications equipment; 3) Experience controlling hazardous materials incidents; and (4) Experience developing, implementing, or providing training in fire protection and prevention. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the Federal service, (GS-06).

Advancement requirement to positions up to GS-05: Candidates may be advanced without time restriction to positions up to GS-5 if the position to be filled is no more than two grades above the lowest grade the employee held within the preceding 52 weeks under his or her latest non-temporary competitive appointment.
Time in Grade Requirement for GS-06: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-05).
Time in Grade Requirement for GS-07: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-06).

Maximum Entry Age (MEA)
The MEA for Firefighters is 37. An employee originally hired into a covered position must be hired by the last day of the month he/she reaches 37.
Maximum Reentry Age
An employee who previously served on a covered position may be rehired past the MEA as long as he/she is able to complete 20 years of covered service by his/her mandatory retirement age. The maximum re-entry age for the individual is calculated by determining the total amount of time he/she has served on a covered position and subtracting that from age 57 if a firefighter. The employee's current age is compared to the calculated maximum re-entry age to determine if he/she can be rehired into the covered position.
Waivers to Maximum Entry Age
MEA may be waived, but only under specific circumstances and only if approved by the authorized entity: Waivers to MEA for firefighters must be approved by local Command.
