This position reports directly to the Assistant Chief, Engineering Service, Bay Pines VA Health Care System. Bay Pines VA Health Care Center is a large, complex medical center providing care to more than 90 thousand veterans in seven counties of Florida. The Pipefitting-Plumbing Shop which performs maintenance, inspection, adjustment, repair, installation, removal, and testing on the plumbing/steam/sanitation distribution system and associated equipment and attachments located on the campus.

Duties

Major duties include, but are not limited to: Ensures that work assignments are completed correctly and accurately Schedules the overall time and leave of subordinates while taking workload into consideration Participates in interviews and hiring of new employees for the unit as well as other units within Engineering Service Initiates recommendations for promotions, sets performance standards, completes formal evaluations, and issues or recommends disciplinary actions Hears grievances, identifies and provides training, evaluates contractor work, and recommends awards and position classification Coordinates work and projects among other shop supervisors based on the workload and priorities Plans the use of subordinate workers, equipment, facilities, materials and tools based on the short and long term planning needs of department Oversees the daily operation of the unit, ensures that agency policies and priorities are being followed; develops performance standards; and evaluates work performance of subordinates Identifies developmental and training needs of the shop employees, making recommendations to the Assistant Chief, Engineering Service to provide or make provisions for such development and training Evaluates work related problems such as excessive costs or low productivity, determines causes, and implements corrective actions Oversees contract service personnel while they are working on site, which involves work instructions, directing, problem solving, coordination, and work review Develops specifications and other required documents for yearly contracts and one-time service contracts Performs other related duties as assigned. PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: Employee will make repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding and platforms, and where the systems and equipment worked on are in hard-to-reach places. Employee will be standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Employee will frequently handle, lift, carry and set up parts and equipment that weigh up to 50 pounds. Occasionally items may weigh more than 50 pounds. Work is done inside and outside, and is usually dirty, dusty, greasy, and smelly. There is frequent exposure to the possibility of uncomfortable heat conditions. The employee is exposed to the possibility of strains, cuts, scrapes, bruises, burns, and infections. The employee is occasionally exposed to the possibility of broken bones. Employee may be required to work in areas that have asbestos containing materials and will, therefore, be required to use personal protective equipment (PPE) including respirators and other equipment to prevent possible asbestos exposure. You will be responsible for completing respirator training, fit testing and training in the proper use and maintenance of general PPE. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
