*This position is organizationally aligned to the Respiratory Care Unit, Medicine Service, at the Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital - a Level 1a Complexity VHA Facility.

Duties

Duties: Therapeutic and diagnostic procedures with the use of medical gases and administration devices, humidification and aerosols Administration of medication to the cardiopulmonary system Ventilatory support, including maintenance and management of life support systems, and the patient/ventilator interface Bronchopulmonary drainage and breathing exercises Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) Rapid Response Team (RRT) Insertion and maintenance of artificial airways including but not limited to endotracheal tubes (ET) and intubating laryngotracheo mask (ILMA) airways. Arterial puncture Blood gas analysis Patient/family education Recognition of the need for medical intervention if patient safety is at risk. Home oxygen evaluations The RRT practices professionally, must be reliable, able to work independently and be self-motivated. The RRT is responsible for performing job duties in accordance with mission, vision, and values of Hines VA Hospital. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Education. Individuals must have successfully completed a respiratory care program accredited by the CoARC or its successor. Licensure. Persons appointed or reassigned to RRT positions in the GS-0601 series must possess and maintain for the duration of employment a full, current and unrestricted license from a state to practice as an RRT. Credential. Persons appointed or reassigned to RRT positions in the GS-0601 series must possess and maintain for the duration of employment a valid, current, unrestricted credential of RRT English Language Proficiency. RTs/RRTs appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7403(f). May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). A Registered Respiratory Therapist as defined by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) with current certification. Maintains a current CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) card. Maintains current proficiency and competency standards for hospital and service. Maintains state license and OORAM certification. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Qualifications: A Registered Respiratory Therapist as defined by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) with current certification. Maintains a current CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) card. Maintains current proficiency and competency standards for hospital and service. Maintains state license and OORAM certification. You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-11 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-09. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade Grade Determinations: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-9 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Skill in applying analytical and evaluative techniques to the identification, consideration and resolution of issues and problems of a procedural and/or factual nature. Knowledge and skill in adapting analytical techniques and evaluation criteria to the measurement and improvement of program effectiveness and/or organizational productivity. knowledge in a wide variety of computer and data management packages and VA databases including those such as Clinic Practice Management Dashboard, VISTA, CPRS, Clinic Access Index, Access Glide Path, SAIL, SPARQ, SHEP, Pyramid, etc. Knowledge and skill in applying analytical and evaluative methods and techniques to detect, deliberate and resolve issues or problems with practices or policies. Knowledge and skill in the use of computer software equivalent to Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, Access, Outlook. Ability to manage day-to-day operations and triage/prioritize immediate needs, including troubleshooting a wide variety of issues on any given day. OR, Experience, Licensure and Credential: Candidates must: Have one year of creditable experience equivalent to the GS-09 grade level demonstrating the clinical competencies described at that level. ii. The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-11. Physical Requirements: Physical demands may include repetitive body movements including the following: frequent reaching, standing, walking, and lifting of equipment and/or patients to provide patient care. This position requires extension of the hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction including above or below shoulder level, during the provision of patient care, including retrieval of needed equipment, supplies and to make contact with the patient. This position may require the maintenance of an upright position to perform duties associated with patient care.
