Incumbent receives, stores, and orders equipment and supplies for Environmental Management Service. Performs some preventative maintenance tasks such as oiling, greasing, changing filters, making operational adjustments, cleaning such machines as vacuums, floor buffers/scrubbers, carpet shampoo units, and housekeeping aid carts. Plans, forecasts, orders, and stocks supplies to prevent depletion of inventories.

Removes cardboard bales from baler with tow motor when needed. Maintains accurate records of contaminated waste picked up and destroyed by vendor. Maintains Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) binder to ensure they are updated. Position maintains tool and stockroom of housecleaning equipment and supplies. Incumbent will teach others safe operation of assigned machines and check all equipment used daily for mechanical problems of frayed cords to prevent fire and shock. Incumbent must have operating knowledge of modem housekeeping machines, equipment, tools and supplies used in sanitation operations. Must be able to teach and train others in safe operation of all assigned machines and related accessories. Must possess admin skills and ability to plan, forecasts, orders, and stocks supplies to prevent depletion of inventories. Must be able to account for and control use of machines, tools, and equipment used in maintaining environmental sanitation services. Must have a working knowledge of all chemicals and products used in the performance of duties with the ability to instruct others in proper storage and safe handling to avoid injury or illness to self and others. Incumbent will be familiar with and conform to Federal and State of NC infectious waste laws governing the collection, storage, transportation, treatment, and ultimate disposal of hazardous waste generated by this VA Medical Center. Must be knowledgeable of the provisions of the Occupational Safety and Health (OSHA) Hazardous Communications Standards (29 CFR 1910.1200). Incumbent is responsible for requesting, storing, distributing, and maintaining adequate inventory of operating supplies according to stock levels established within appropriate monthly budget. Follow up action is required on partial deliveries and backorders with Acquisition and Material Managements Service to ensure all items ordered are received and accounted for. Performs other directly related duties as assigned. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Must be in good physical condition in order to accomplish the tasks associated with this job. Most work involves standing up and the position involves frequent twisting, bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching, lifting, pushing, and pulling. Incumbent is frequently required to lift boxes weighing up to sixty-five pounds and is required to push carts loaded with supplies with total weights up to approximately three hundred pounds. Incumbent must be able to read instructions in small print on the back of containers in order to mix chemicals solutions properly. Alertness is required while operating mechanical and powered equipment. The ability to write clearly is required to ensure accurate posting of records involving equipment and supplies. Working Conditions. Is exposed to danger of infection in the handling of contaminated waste and injury or illness in the handling of hazardous chemicals. Appropriate protective clothing and safeguards are provided. Incumbent is instructed to adhere and comply with instructions given by immediate supervisor. For the most part work is performed in typical storeroom settings primarily inside well lighted, and ventilation is adequate. Outside work may be performed in areas such as open loading docks during inclement weather. Incumbent is subject to cuts, scrape, bruises, and other injuries associated with equipment maintenance and stock handling. Maintenance of equipment can be dirty, dusty, and greasy. Tour of duty may be adjusted according to the needs of Environmental Management Services.
