This position is located at the Armed Forces Retirement Home (AFRH), Security Division in Washington D.C. The primary purpose of this position is to perform various security related functions at the AFRH-Washington campus. The Security Division is composed of agency and contract employees.
Duties
As a LEAD SECURITY GUARD, you will:
Display a customer service attitude toward the Residents, employees, tenants and visitors. Perform Field Training Officer (FTO) duties for the security guards. The purpose of the Field Training is to train new security guards so that each is prepared to function as a solo security guard at the conclusion of their training cycle. Field Training Officers have the dual responsibility of providing security service to the Armed Forces Retirement Home, as well as conducting training and evaluations for new security guards.
Monitor a complex and sophisticated fire, duress and intrusion alarm system and acts promptly to accurately read, interpret and react in order to take the proper action to safeguard lives and property. Occasionally, specific alarms require prompt notification of the local fire department, senior level AFRH personnel, local police authorities, AFRH medical personnel, and maintenance personnel. Monitor closed circuit television cameras located on the grounds of the facility. In collaboration with the supervisor, plan, organize, direct, coordinate, and supervise the work activities of the security guards. Receive telephone requests for security services and all other requests throughout the Home. Dispatch all calls to appropriate personnel via radio or telephone.
Respond to emergency and routine calls within the facility. These calls include, but are not limited to: pull cords; pendants; telephone emergencies; assisting the Sheridan and Scott Wellness Center Clinic with emergences in which the staff may be involved; death reports; assault reports; theft reports; accident reports; trespassing; property damage reports; fire alarms; intrusion alarms; escorts fireboard/law enforcement personnel to destination; and any and all other emergency or routine situations that occur on the grounds of the facility.

You must meet the following requirements within 30 days of the closing date of this announcement.
Competition for Security Guard positions is restricted by law to persons entitled to veterans' preference as long as such applicants are available for appointment.
Specialized Experience: One year of experience at the GS-05 level, or equivalent, that has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position as listed above. Specialized experience is defined as:
-providing guidance and direction over an organization that involves the protection of property against such hazards as fire, theft, damage, accident, or trespass; OR
-maintaining order and protecting life; OR
-using investigative techniques and ability to write reports.
Physical Requirements: The work requires regular and recurring physical exertion such as long periods of standing, walking, driving, bending, stooping, reaching, and similar activities. Employees engage in such exertions when responding to alarms, observing suspects, or participating in training activities, climbing stairs in dormitory and office buildings, or walking foot patrols in and around large buildings. In some positions, the work may regularly involve lifting and carrying of heavy objects of 50 pounds or less.
The following medical requirements also apply to all applicants: good near and distant vision, ability to distinguish basic colors, and ability to hear the conversational voice.
In addition to the above requirements, you must meet the following time-in-grade requirement, if applicable:
For the GS-6, you must have been at the GS-5 level for 52 weeks
Time After Competitive Appointment: Candidates who are current Federal employees serving on a non-temporary competitive appointment must have served at least three months in that appointment.
