About the Position: Serves as a Paralegal Specialist responsible for providing technical paralegal functions to include research through legal information networks providing evaluation, and processing of civil and administrative matters; managing legal services administrative activities; and managing the income tax program.

Duties

Performs technical functions for the office to include interviewing clients, evaluating legal situations or needs; conducts legal research, analyzes information and prepares drafts and/or edits legal or administrative documents. Provides guidance and documentation for assisting clients in a variety of Civilian Administrative law matters as appropriate. Acts on behalf of the Legal Assistance Office, Office of the Staff Judge Advocate, to contact various businesses, insurance companies, local/state/out of state courts, and other agencies to discern if facts provided are accurate and complete. Provides legal administration to perform the full range of administrative functions for the Legal Assistance office. Point of contact with on-line client database system (CIS), to coordinate the implementation and introduction of new and revised software applications for the Legal Assistance office. Point of contact for operational procedures to assure gradual phase-out of obsolete systems and a smooth transition to new systems. Organizes legal reference materials, including responsibility for preventive law program consisting of articles/client handouts and briefings for numerous soldiers.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Must possess a current notary license, or be able to obtain and maintain a notary license, with the State of Alaska;, required to perform many of assigned duties and responsibilities.
  • Temporary Duty travel (TDY) may be required up to 10% of the time.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07). OR Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as Paralegal Studies, Criminal Justice Administration, or Law. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.) OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages. You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Legal, Government and JurisprudenceManages and Organizes InformationResearchTechnical CompetenceWritten Communication Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-07).
