This position is located at the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas.
Duties
Responsible for a full range of building and maintenance trades; accomplishing maintenance for all buildings, utilities, roads, curbs, irrigation, heating and cooling units, including but not limited to preventative care, repair, remodeling, installing as required by the National Cemetery. Independently determines repairs needed, performing work with little or no supervision. Apply specialized work in carpentry, electrical, masonry, plumbing (boilers, irrigation), and painting. Build, repairs, and install shelves, cabinets, partitions, floors, doors, and framework. Paint interiors and exteriors of building and both mobile and stationary equipment. Assists with plumbing and minor irrigation tasks/repairs, including pump, valves, spray heads, and controllers. Reads and examines drawings to determine sizes and dimensions from blueprints. Selects materials, such as lumber, paneling, wood, and electrical fixtures. Performs routine minor maintenance on heating and HVAC systems. Assist in review of contract specifications using standards and procedural guidance as required.
Work schedule: May be required to work Monday through Friday to include occasional weekends. Due to the mission of the National Cemetery, the cemetery cannot be closed for more than 2 consecutive days at any given time. Additionally, when a Federal holiday falls on a Monday or Friday, staff may be required to work on that holiday or a Saturday. All staff is required to work Memorial Day each year. Staff will be required to work overtime, weekends and holidays when necessary to meet the needs of the cemetery. Occasionally staff may be called back to the facility to perform emergency overtime work.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 10/16/2024.
Your background must demonstrate work involved in plumbing (boilers, irrigation), carpentry, electrical, masonry, painting, and other related trades experience of a Maintenance Mechanic, as described in the duties section of the announcement. Routine and preventative maintenance care experience is also required.
EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Physical Requirements: Work is carried out in a wide variety of positions and areas. Work may be performed overhead, in tight quarters or underground, requiring stretching, kneeling, bending, stooping, crawling, and doing tasks while in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Lifts up to 50 pounds. May lift over 50 pounds with assistance from employees and/or tools.
Working Conditions: Incumbent works inside and outside. Work may be performed above the ground, atop buildings and structures, or below ground level in tight, cramped quarters for repairs of sprinkler systems, etc. Inside work is performed where it is drafty, noisy and fumes from paint and other chemicals may be present, along with wood, brick and masonry dust present in the air. There is frequently exposure to the possibility of cuts, bruises, shocks, burns, and strains. Work performed outdoors is in all types of inclement weather, including snowstorms, extreme heat, and rain. Due to the extremely sensitive nature of the work at a cemetery, which requires involvement with grieving individuals, mental and emotional stability is always required.
