About the Position: Serves as a Braker-Switcher on 120 ton diesel electric locomotives. Performs individual switching, signaling, flagging, coupling, uncoupling, brake setting, observing and safety tasks involved in the movement of box cars containing hazardous cargo.
Duties
Monitor the safe movement of trains and railcars.
Comply and follow railroad safety and movement regulations.
Signal the locomotive engineer of braking and stopping distances in connection with coupling.
Observe safety tasks with the movement of box cars containing hazardous cargo.
Set out, transfer and pick up rail cars by uncoupling, setting, and releasing car brakes and air brake hoses.
Select and use proper railroad signal codes and techniques to alert locomotive engineers and railroad crew members for normal and emergency conditions.
Set and reset track switches when box cars are out and picked up.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter.
- This position has a requirement to lift up to 20 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
- This position is inclement weather essential.
- This position is subject to a pre-employment drug screening, and random drug testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
- This position requires working irregular shifts.
- This position has been designated as Key-Essential.
- This position requires the incumbent to wear protective equipment, e.g., respirators, safety glasses, etc.
- This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 10% of the time.
- One year probationary period may be required.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Braker-Switcher without more than normal supervision. Ability to work with railroad tracks; Pick up and set out points for locomotives; Assist with checking railroad track switches; Assist with using railroad signals to alert crew members; Assist with the pick up of train cars; and Check railroad tracks for obstructions. Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

PHYSICAL EFFORT: Must use physical agility and effort in pushing, pulling, lifting, positioning and turning various braking, switching, and coupling devices; moving and lifting arms and devices to give signals; walking over rails and ties and running to perform tasks. Must be able to climb aboard locomotives and train cars, sometimes while they are moving or have slippery steps, rungs, and grab irons. Required to lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds and put forth similar effort in pushing and removing obstacles from the railway.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Works under many adverse conditions in both good and bad weather. Frequently exposed to loud noise, fumes and odors. Exposed to possible injuries from accidents. May wear protective clothing, such as safety shoes and gloves. Any unusual environmental working conditions that may arise will be compensated for under an appropriate category of the environmental pay regulation.
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -- no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
