This position is located with the Public Health Nursing Services in the Division of Public Health Service of the Gallup Indian Medical Center, Gallup NM. This position serves as an assistant to the Public Health Nurse, interpreting, making home visits, assisting in the schools, clinics and operating a motor vehicle. Reports to the Director of Public Health Nursing.
Duties
Acts as Interpreter to the Navajo people in homes, clinics and meetings. Ability to translate in Navajo and English the illness, treatment and care being provided.
Interprets health teaching and instructions of the PHN and other health care providers to Navajo clients using knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology.
Interprets to health care provider the health problems, needs and responses of the Navajo people and the concepts of native cultural beliefs and practices.
Takes vital signs- temperature, height, weight, blood pressure and elicits history of presenting complaint.
Serves as an assistant to the Public Health Nursing, operating a motor vehicle, making home visits and assisting in the school and clinics.
Performs preventive maintenance services; performs inspection and safety checks on all vehicles as scheduled.
Performs housekeeping aid duties; vacuums, dusts, and mops floors in offices, bathrooms and other assigned areas.
May exert moderate physical effort in the frequent handling of objects weighing up to 40 pounds and occasional handing of heavier objects.
Makes independent home visits to elicit information, explain informed consent, deliver and explain referrals and appointments; delivers prescription drugs; obtain specimens.
Qualifications

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
WG-05: No specific length of work experience is required. You will be rated on the basis of your response to the assessment questions included in this vacancy announcement, and the information contained in their resume. Your resume must demonstrate experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Experience in interpreting Navajo and English, the health teachings or instructions by the health care providers using medical terminology, anatomy and physiology. Assisting at community events, clinics, school events with transport of equipment, taking vital signs, assisting patient's with filling out required forms, and interpret vaccine information. Completes preventive maintenance services, performs inspection & safety checks on GSA vehicles.
PHYSICAL EFFORT: Physical effort is used reaching, bending, turning, or moving hands, arm, feet, and legs to operate hand controls on vehicle operated. When transporting patients, incumbent may be required to lift and maneuver patients weighing in excess of 150 pounds. Incumbent may exert moderate physical effort in the frequent handling of objects weighing up to 40 pounds, and the occasional handling of heavier objects while assisting patients. Considerable physical effort may be required to change tires and make limited emergency repairs.
WORKING CONDITIONS: As an MVO, incumbent is required to operate vehicles in all types of traffic and weather on public roads and is exposed to the danger of serious accidents. Incumbent drives in heavy traffic and at highway speeds over complicated roads and interchange systems.
Time In Grade
Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).
