The primary purpose of this position, SIGN PAINTER, WG-4104-09, is to design, layout, and decorate signs for inside and exterior use, and to execute freehand and mechanical letter and various production techniques in applying a variety of graphic arts techniques in performing functions requiring skill in lettering.
Duty Title: Signage Journeyman
Duties
Plan and lay out work from blueprints, sketches, drawings, specifications, and work orders in designing and decorating signs for inside and exterior use.
Apply a variety of graphic arts techniques, including freehand, mechanical lettering, and silk screen printing to produce signs, posters, and displays for inside and exterior use.
Prepare various surfaces to receive paint or reflective sheeting by mechanically and chemically removing old paint and rust, filling cracks, sanding, and applying fillers and base coats.
Mix or blend pigments with oil, thinners, and other ingredients to obtain a paint or other surface coating mixture and apply paint, ink, or reflective sheeting.
Use and maintain various types of brushes and hand and power tools.

- PHYSICAL: THIS POSITION REQUIRES A PRE-EMPLOYMENT PHYSICAL.
- The work will require the employee to drive a motor vehicle. An appropriate, valid driver's license will be required for the position.
- May be required to work shift work and other than normal duty hours, which may include evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.
- Emergency overtime may be required.
- Must obtain and maintain a current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.
- May be required to assist other workers in various crafts to include training and/or guiding lower graded employees.
- Exposure to toxic paints, chemicals, or other hazards may required occupational health examinations.
- Flightline Driving/Testing is required.
- May be required to participate in mobility exercises.
Qualifications
In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C.
QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-4100 Painting And Paperhanging Family. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.
The screen out element for this position is: Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision.

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Work requires continual movement of hand and arm, standing, reaching, and bending, as well as lifting materials up to 10 pounds. Occasionally, some projects may require heavier effort in doing tasks such as erecting signs or displays, kneeling to letter vehicles and equipment, climbing ladders, or working from scaffolding. May be required to handle items weighing up to 40 pounds.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed indoors in adequately lighted and heated shops, although some is performed outdoors in good weather. Some outdoor projects may require work near moving vehicles and exposure to the possibility of falls. Subject to the possibility of cuts, bruises, and irritation of eyes and skin from exposure to fumes, solvents, or paints.
