The position is assigned to the Mason shop, a department of Carpentry shop, within the Maintenance and Repair Section of Facilities Engineering Service within the Sioux Falls VA Healthcare System (SFVAHCS). The Sioux Falls VA Health Care System consists of the Medical Center at the main campus and five Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs).

Duties

Major duties listed but not limited to: Mason Duties: Brickwork and associated tuck pointing; bricklaying as required to repair existing, cutting and splitting of bricks and blocks; includes, but not limited to, common and face brick, terra cotta, cement, and cinder block. Interior expansion joint replacement; creates or replaces expansion joints and edges using forms, edging tools, jointers, and straightedges. Construction of steel reinforced support pads for building equipment. Removal of shower/tub enclosures and converting to shower stalls; installs ceramic and stone tilework throughout, including the floor, taking care to create proper slope in floor for drainage and ensuring it is watertight. General ceramic tile work for wet areas, such as kitchens, bathrooms, operating room scrub areas and labs. Creates window and doorway openings in concrete masonry unit (CMU) walls; installs windowsills and door jambs, along with lintels used to support the weight of the wall above the openings. Prepares substrate surfaces, lays out, forms up, pours, and finishes concrete sections in roadways and sidewalks, taking care to ensure height and slope matches the existing within one-fourth inch. Constructs and repairs retaining walls. Shapes and repairs sandstone capstone and ridge. Repairs existing manholes and catch basins, adjusting for proper height and slope to drain. Construction and maintenance of patio areas, using paving stone or brick, requiring that materials be sorted by size and shape, so it can be laid out and arranged according to strength and aesthetic appearance. Frames, places, and finishes concrete as well as drills, cuts, chips, and cores, concrete to make necessary repairs to floors, ceilings, sidewalks, walls, curb and gutter, and parking lots. Carpenter Duties: Repairs and constructs walls of various materials like gypsum, stucco, concrete, plaster, steel stud, block, or brick. Alters wall layouts by demolishing and rebuilding, bracing with steel framing. Taping, mudding, and texturing as needed. Cuts and patches cores and holes in floors, ceilings, and walls as required for needed repairs. Installs metal shelving, cabinets, and pallet racking. Preps surfaces and installs vinyl coated floor tile, solid sheet vinyl flooring or other substrates. Installs new or replaces existing carpet tiles, and various forms of vinyl flooring using the proper tools and adhesives, coordinates with the Interior Designers for color and material selection. Installs window and door frames in new and pre-existing areas and refits doors and windows in metal casings. Construct, install, repair, and modify wood and wood substitute structures and items requiring close tolerance fit, structural stability, and weathertight assemblies. Apply wood, metal, and various composite materials for both interior and exterior finishes. Work Schedule: Monday- Friday, 8:00am- 4:30pm Virtual: This is not a virtual position. Driver's License: A current, valid state-issued Driver's License is required for this position. Physical Requirements: The work is active, frequently requiring heavy physical effort. The incumbent must have the physical strength, safe approach and stamina to cope with heavy lifting and strenuous work, such as mixing mortars, setting concrete and gypsum blocks, or carrying up to 90 pounds of materials, tools, or equipment. Standing, kneeling, and stooping for long periods of time are routine. Working Conditions: While performing the duties of this job, the Mason is regularly exposed to fumes or airborne particles and outdoor weather conditions. He/She is frequently exposed to work near moving mechanical parts, work in high precarious places, toxic or caustic chemicals are used, and vibration of equipment. Incumbent works indoors and outdoors in a variety of weather conditions such as high and extremely low temperatures. Some outdoor projects may require work near moving vehicles and exposure to the possibility of falls while working on scaffolds or ladders. Workers are subject to high noise levels from operating power tools, or other hazards such as airborne dust, cuts, bruises and irritation of eyes and skin from exposure to chemicals. The use of protective gear such as ear plugs, safety glasses, respirators, and gloves is required. He/She safely drives in all types of traffic and/or weather conditions and is exposed to possible accidents and injury.
