The purpose of this position is to serve as a Maintenance Mechanic in Engineering Services, at the Oklahoma City VA Health Care System (Lawton, Oklahoma CBOC).

Duties

Major duties include but are not limited to: Troubleshoots equipment malfunctions and failures and determines the extent of repairs and parts needed, estimated materials required, selects best work methods, techniques and trade practices and accomplishes the repair or overhaul. Independently diagnoses, plans and completes projects or work orders involving routine repairs. Is responsible for selecting and safely using proper tools, devices, manuals, references and efficient procedures. He/she also performs walk through inspections of buildings and initiates electronic work orders for deficiencies found. Measures, cuts and constructs using standard building materials. Measures, cuts, constructs, installs, repairs and modifies routine mill work, framing, benches, partitions, tables, furniture, etc. Performs work to close tolerances, exact fit, and structural soundness. Plan, measure, and lay out carpentry materials using typical shop mathematics for complex and exact projects. Must be able to interpret blueprints, sketches, manufacturers' specifications, and technical manuals, and be knowledgeable in shop math and standard formulas. Works from building plans, blueprints, and sketches, to plan and lay out the routing, placement, slant, slope, fall, and proper operation, of systems and equipment. Uses tools and equipment such as plumb bobs, mercury gauges, dividers, closet augers, hydrostatic pumps, and lead pots. Is responsible for selecting and safely using proper tools, devices, manuals, references and efficient procedures. Diagnoses malfunctioning systems, apparatus, or components, using test equipment and hand tools to locate the cause of a breakdown and correct the problem. Troubleshoots circuits, controls and systems to locate, repair and replace defective components. The incumbent must be skilled in the use of all common electrical hand and power tools and testing equipment as required. Operate and use a wide variety of specialty woodworking machines and tools. Operate and use a variety of tools by setting-up, adjusting, and maintaining tools to meet required specifications. Plans measure and lay out carpentry materials using broad knowledge of wood materials and substitutes, with general and precision woodworking techniques. Define repairs/upgrades and define required materials (bill of materials), tools and equipment requirements. Repairs plumbing systems. Installing, modifying, and repairing new and existing utility, supply, and disposal systems. Repairs equipment such as sewage, water, oil, and gas distribution systems and water closets, tubs, fire sprinkler systems, and showers. Measures, cuts, constructs, installs, repairs and modifies routine mill work, framing, benches, partitions, tables, furniture, etc. Performs work to close tolerances, exact fit, and structural soundness. Plan, measure, and lay out carpentry materials using typical shop mathematics for complex and exact projects. Measures, cuts and constructs using standard building materials. Physical Requirements: Work requires strenuous exertion in building, removing or replacing walls, floors; requires standing for long periods of time, working in heated or cold areas. Incumbent must work on ladders, scaffolds, and roofs while sitting, kneeling, standing or stooping in an awkward position. Must handle heavy tools i.e. drills at arm's length and overhead from time to time). Must unload from trucks and place on storage racks such heavy and bulky materials as plywood, wallboard, hardboard, and other types of lumber and materials. Incumbent must work throughout all areas of the Medical Center. In some cases, he must go in out-of-the-way areas such as boiler/mechanical rooms, pipe chases, roofs, attics, basement, etc., which may require kneeling, bending, stooping, crawling, etc. Frequently handles objects weighing 10 to 90 pounds. Project demands may require work at other than normal administrative hours. Working Conditions: Some work is performed in the shop areas. Incumbent is required to work in close, tight areas at times. Incumbent is exposed to hazards of working from heights, falling materials, steam and hot water lines, sometimes exposed to electrical shocks. Incumbent is subject to working out in all kinds of weather conditions and temperatures and in confined dusty and dirty areas. Work is usually done in well lighted, heated and ventilated areas. Outdoor work is normally done in good weather. Incumbent may occasionally work in dirty, dusty, hot or cold environments such as crawl spaces and attics. Incumbent is exposed to the possibility of cuts, bruises, scrapes, broken bones, and serious burns caused by electrical shock, high voltage, and hot components while working around equipment. At times, works around extremely high noise and vibration sources. Work in ward areas around sick patients. Incumbent may be called upon to work overtime and call-back in case of emergencies.
