This position is located at the Veterans Health Administration, Department of Veterans
Affairs, Mid-Atlantic Health Care Network (VISN 6), Central Virginia VA Healthcare
System, Richmond, Virginia. This position serves as a Maintenance Mechanic Locksmith
within the Engineering Section of the Fredericksburg Health Care Center (FxHCC).
The primary duties of the position are repairing, overhauling, modifying, testing, and installing
a variety of locking devices.
Duties
Duties and responsibilities for this position include, but not limited to the following:
Performs all duties of a journeyman Locksmith.
Performs complex tasks involved in building, repairing, overhauling, modifying, adapting, testing, and installing a variety of locking and security devices typically found on doors, windows, narcotic boxes, medicine and file cabinets, lockers, laundry chutes, electric panels, padlocks, burglar alarms, special locks used in detention areas, x-ray developing, and other areas where due to unusual conditions the area must be made secure temporarily or for an indefinite length of time.
Responsible for the FxHCC Locksmith Program including data entry and updating key information into space files.
maintains a file of locksmith supply literature and informs supervisor of supply reorder needs.
Determines the appropriate quantity and types of locks, parts, tools, and key blanks to stock.
Maintains a complete record of each lock and updates daily posting all changes.
Fabricates keys from patterns or by code equipment.
Responsible for installing and maintaining electronic locking systems, like digitally encoded key systems for example, the Marlock brand security system.
Must have the ability to use software packages to various lock systems including those on med carts and security locking systems.
Responsible for the training and development of Key Control Programs
for all Key Control Representatives.
Responsible for operating a computerized system of records.
Conducts training on the Key Control System and required Computerized System Records.
Works closely with management at all levels concerning security of keying issues and to determine the most suitable locks to be used in throughout the Fredericksburg Health Care Center.
Establish and maintain the Key Control System for the FxHCC Engineering
Section.
Work also includes duplicating and cutting keys, the keying and combination of
locking mechanisms and the management of the key control system for the FxHCC.
Cuts all keys for use by hospital personnel, codes them for identification and
services key duplicating machine to keep it in good operating condition.
Maintains electronic prox card locks for medication rooms, computer rooms, pharmacy, warehouse and other secure areas. Uses personal computer to assign prox cards to necessary employees.
Performs other directly related duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm

Physical Requirements: Incumbent is required to be able to lift 50 pounds and be physically able to walk, bend, stoop, stand and work in close spaces for long periods of time. Must have normal hearing and vision (with or without glasses) and possess good dexterity and coordination between hands and eyes.
Working Conditions: Incumbent works in a fully secured shop and performs 60% of preliminary work therein. The remainder of the time spent working is in the field, both indoors and outdoors.
Exposed to possibility of cuts, abrasions, scrapes and bruises. Must wear shields for
protection when operating key cutting machine and electric grinder. Observes all safety
precautions.
