Duties

Assure recreation sites and areas are operated and maintained in accordance with operation and maintenance plans. Reports on the conditions and use of sites and areas. Performs safety hazard analyses of public use areas. Patrol wilderness to ensure areas are operated, used and maintained in accordance with plan. Advise visitors about safety, fire prevention and proper and authorized use of recreational facilities. Provides detailed information to the public about recreation opportunities, campground fees, available facilities, etc..

To qualify for GS-04,you must have six months of general experience AND six months of specialized at or equivalent to the GS-3 equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade (GS-03) to be creditable. Specialized experience is defined as: Experience that provided a knowledge of the goals, principles, methods, and techniques of recreation, And an understanding of the interests of individuals or groups. -OR- 2 years above high school with courses related to the occupation, if required;-OR- Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate undergraduate education. To qualify for GS-05,you must have one-year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade (GS-04) to be creditable. Specialized experience is defined as: Experience that provided a knowledge of the goals, principles, methods, and techniques of recreation, And an understanding of the interests of individuals or groups. -OR- Successful completion of a 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in courses related to recreation or physical education;-OR- Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate undergraduate education. To qualify for GS-06, you must have one-year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade (GS-05) to be creditable. Specialized experience is defined as: Experience that demonstrated the ability to apply the principles of one or more specialty areas of recreation such as: planning, organizing, coordinating, supervising, or evaluating community, industrial, outdoor, institutional, or other recreational programs; planning, establishing, Evaluating a recreational curriculum for junior college or higher academic levels; Instructing in the principles and techniques of recreational program planning and management. -OR- One full year of graduate education that is directly related to the work of the position;-OR- Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. To qualify for GS-07, you must have one-year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade (GS-06) to be creditable. Specialized experience is defined as: Experience that demonstrated the ability to apply the principles of one or more specialty areas of recreation such as: planning, organizing, coordinating, supervising, or evaluating community, industrial, outdoor, institutional, or other recreational programs; Planning, establishing, or evaluating a recreational curriculum for junior college or higher academic levels; Instructing in the principles and techniques of recreational program planning and management; Serving in a leadership role in the programs and activities of local, regional, and/or national recreational organizations. -OR- One full year of graduate education that is directly related to the work of the position;-OR- Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above GS-5 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. One full year of graduate education meets the requirements for GS-7. Two full years of graduate education or a master's degree meets the requirements for GS-9. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement. Physical Demands: The work is performed mostly outdoors in rugged terrain; to include very steep, wet, muddy, rough, uneven or rocky surfaces. The position requires physical exertion such as, but not limited to, driving over unpaved roads, walking over rough terrain or inclines, standing for long periods of time, bending, crouching and stooping, digging, hiking, lifting, biking, stretching, reaching, or similar activities. Work may involve early morning hours, night hours, or daytime hours and may require working on holidays. It can require carrying heavy backpacks, tools, rescue equipment, or other loads. Work Environment: The work is performed outdoors in rugged terrain; to include steep, wet, muddy, rough, uneven or rocky surfaces; positions require physical exertions, such as, bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, and similar activities. Individuals should be capable of working alone, or with other people, during early morning hours, night, or during the day.

Education

In addition to the experience requirements described in the group coverage standard, Individual Occupational Requirements require the following specialized experience (for positions at GS-4 and above).

Examples of qualifying specialized experience include:

  • Group leader, counselor, or similar work in public and private recreation programs for adults or children such as summer camps, local playgrounds, YWCA and YMCA clubs, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, urban community centers, or resort recreational activities.
  • Teacher's aid in elementary school recreation or physical education program, with emphasis on development of general recreational skills and abilities.
  • Aid or assistant assignments in recreation while on active military service.
  • Aid or assistant in the organization and administration of recreation activities, such as preparing activities calendars, maintaining attendance records, and providing information concerning schedules and activities.
  • Summer aid in a State or national park, with duties related to the recreational activities of visitors to campsites, trails, picnic areas, nature and raft centers, and boating and fishing areas (e.g., demonstrating camping techniques and park safety, conducting nature tours, and overseeing farm animal areas provided for children).
  • Sales or stock clerk in a recreation supplies and equipment shop.
  • Aid or assistant in the issuance of authorized property, and in the maintenance of inventory control and accountability for such property in a recreation facility.
  • Aid or assistant in a hotel or resort recreation service, with duties such as setting up areas for games, tournaments, and other organized group recreational activities.

Education and Training

For GS-3: Successful completion of 1 year of study.

For GS-4: Successful completion of 2 years of study that included at least 12 semester hours in courses related to recreation (e.g., basic psychology, group dynamics, physical education, arts and crafts, etc.).

For GS-5: Successful completion of a 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in courses related to recreation or physical education.

Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above GS-5 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. One full year of graduate education meets the requirements for GS-7.If using education to qualify, you must submit copies of all transcripts or a list of college courses that include hours and grades from an accredited U.S. college/university.
