This position is located at the the San Francisco Veterans Affairs Health Care System (SFVAHCS). The General Equipment Mechanic is responsible for the maintenance of all equipment assigned to the Mechanic Shop.

Duties

Apply a variety of methods, procedures, and techniques used to layout, align, repair, overhaul, and maintain various types of equipment, machinery, and systems that have complex interrelationships among other components. Performs maintenance, repairs equipment assigned to the shop and utilities systems including emergency generators (diesel and gas), medical and non-medical vacuum pumps and air compressors, pumps, valves, blower fans, compressed medical gas systems, nitrous oxide. Performs maintenance and repairs on equipment in the medical field such as sterilizers (steam and gas), pneumatic tube system, operating tables, glass and bottle washers, large washers, warmers and electric beds. Performs maintenance and repairs equipment use daily in food production in the hospital dietetic department. assists in repairs to lock shop equipment as directed by operations supervisor or locksmith. Ability to use hand held tools, power tools and various portable machine tools to accomplish repairs onsite. Troubleshoot equipment and machinery that have complex interrelationships among these components. Knowledge of the electrical/electronic mechanisms and devices involved being able to distinguish mechanical, hydraulic or pneumatic failures from those that are electrical or electronic. Ability to interpret the requirements contained in technical manuals, shop directives, blueprints, and other documents in determining critical dimensions and key reference points. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: General Equipment Mechanic frequently handles objects weighing 45 pounds and occasionally carries objects weighing more than 45 pounds for considerable distances. They are required to push, pull, reach, walk, crawl, kneel, bend and work in cramped positions over and under machinery of all types for sustained periods of time. They must use proper lifting and transporting techniques when working with heavy loads. General Equipment Mechanic usually performs work inside areas that are well lighted, ventilated and heated. Floors are sometimes uneven, oily and slippery. Occasionally work may be performed in very cold, hot or unventilated areas. Outside work is performed in all types of weather. They are frequently exposed to moving objects and sharp edges with the possibility of cuts and bruises. Occasionally, they climb ladders and work from high places. Dirt, grease, and dampness are frequently encountered. Exposure to Electro-magnetic radiation, sparks, high-temperatures, pressurized gases and fluids and to loud noise and vibration from equipment may occur. Exposure to contaminated or infections biological hazards or radiation hazards may also occur.
