About the Position: This is an Industrial Hygiene Technician position located in Fort Wainwright, Alaska. This is a Direct Hire Solicitation

Duties

Perform various duties to assess work practices and conditions for hazards to the health and safety of workers. Plan, organize, and conduct Industrial Hygiene exposure monitoring surveys and follow-up. Perform Industrial Hygiene sampling and measurements using standard methods and specialized equipment. Enter survey data into the Defense Occupational and Environmental Health Readiness System - Industrial Hygiene Module (DOEHRS-IH) Maintain Industrial Hygiene equipment, checking for compliance with existing calibration and maintenance schedules. Document survey observations and findings and prepare written reports.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.

  • This position requires the employee to use personal protective equipment provided by the employer.

Qualifications

Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Additional information about transcripts is in this document. NOTE: Management is selecting this position at the GS-07, GS-08 or GS-09 grade level and the incumbent maybe non-competitively be promoted to the target grade GS-09. GS-07 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes performing one or more of the following: (1) following instructions in industrial hygiene principles and practices, industrial work processes, or the occupationally related health hazard procedures, (2) reviewing, inputting, or retrieving industrial hygiene (IH) reports, (3) assisting with conducting industrial hygiene surveys, or (4) answering IH related basic inquiries. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06). OR Education: One full year of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Industrial Engineering, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Safety, Physics, Engineering, Biological Science, Physical Science or Environmental Health. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.) OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18. Add the two percentages. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.) GS-08 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes performing one or more of the following: (1) anticipating or recognizing potential health hazards within an industrial work environment, (2) evaluating actions taken to correct health hazard deficiencies (3) assisting with industrial hygiene (IH) equipment calibration or maintenance, (4) inputting IH sampling or measurement data into an automated system, (5) conducting or planning IH surveys, (6) maintaining health hazard data and collecting samples using specialized IH equipment, or (7) ensuring sample preservation is sent to the designated laboratory for proper analysis. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07). OR Education: One and a half years of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Industrial Engineering, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Safety, Physics, Engineering, Biological Science, Physical Science or Environmental Health. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.) OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total semester hours minus 18) by 9. Add the two percentages. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.) GS-09 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes performing two or more of the following: (1) conducting industrial hygiene (IH) surveys, (2) evaluating IH survey results, (3) preparing IH survey reports, (4) evaluating potential industrial and occupational health hazards to recommend mitigating hazard controls or medical surveillance, (5) conducting IH sampling methods to determine the nature and degree of occupational health hazards, (6) monitoring data to assess hazardous work practices or environmental conditions, or (7) assisting others with implementing recommended hazard controls.This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-8). OR Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as Industrial Engineering, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Safety, Physics, Engineering, Biological Science, Physical Science or Environmental Health. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.) OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
