This position has been designated as an Essential Position (e.g., snow emergency days, holidays, increased security periods, national emergency). The position cannot be vacated during war or national emergency without seriously impairing the mission. Assignments may be performed at any job site within the organization.
Duties
Serves as Lead Police Officer (Sergeant) with authority and responsibility to perform coaching, facilitating, training and mentoring duties. Identifies, distributes and balances workload and tasks among employees.
Trains or arranges for the training of team members. Resolves simple, informal complaints of employees and refer others to supervisor. Monitors and reports on the status and progress of work.
Serves as desk sergeant/communications control/operations with responsibility for the operation of the communications police network and for direction of patrols throughout the installation.
Coordinates emergency responses between security, fire, and other emergency units, and receives and acts on calls and complaints, including 911/100 emergency calls. Prepares reports and maintains records of work accomplishments.
Performs law enforcement and crime prevention duties to maintain law and order during normal and emergency operations. Performs police duties to assure the protection of life, property, and the civil rights of individuals.
Patrols DLA installation and property to prevent crime, protect life and property and enforce local regulations and laws.
Plans and conducts initial investigations of suspicious activities, security breaches, and crimes. Advises suspects of their Miranda rights prior to questioning. Writes incident and activity reports and detains suspects.
Secures and processes the crime scene, conducts preliminary investigations, gathers evidence and obtains witness statements.
Maintains communications with mobile patrol units and passes directions and information to officers on patrol.
Acts as first responder to all types of emergencies or volatile situations such as terrorist attacks, hostage/barricaded situations, bomb threats, vehicle accidents, robberies, hazardous material incidents, and other emergencies.
Performs fixed post operations located within the interior of DLA installations or at perimeter gates. Controls access to sensitive/restricted areas where there is potential for breach of security, public safety or public health.
Performs inspections on outgoing personnel and their packages and vehicles at various gates and checkpoints to detect, detain, or cite those who attempt to steal government property.
Provides specialized pedestrian and traffic control services in connection with various events. Performs traffic duties including directing traffic, issuing tickets/notices for vehicle operation, and parking violations.

Qualifications
To qualify for a Lead Police Officer, your resume and supporting documentation must support:
A. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular competencies to successfully perform the duties of the position and is directly in or related to this position. To qualify at the GS-07 level, applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 level or equivalent under other pay systems in the Federal service, military or private sector. Applicants must meet eligibility requirements including time-in-grade (General Schedule (GS) positions only), time-after-competitive appointment, minimum qualifications, and any other regulatory requirements by the cut-off/closing date of the announcement. Creditable specialized experience includes:
Experience that provided knowledge of a body of basic laws and regulations, law enforcement operations, practices, and techniques and involved responsibility for maintaining order and protecting life and property.
Experience leading lower graded officers, discussing individual assignments, and reviewing reports and records for completeness and accuracy.
B. Education: As a general rule, education is not creditable above GS-5 for most positions covered by this standard; however, graduate education may be credited in those few instances where the graduate education is directly related to the work of the position.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Education
Substitution of education may not be used in lieu of specialized experience for this grade level.
