The purpose of this position is to operate patient transport vehicles, patient transport vans/buses and other types transport vehicles, capable of carrying up to 8 or more passengers, to and from VA Medical Center facilities, private healthcare facilities, and other private sector areas like patient homes, railway, bus stations and airports. Incumbent drives predetermined and/or scheduled routes or special runs.

Duties

Major duties and responsibilities include: Receiving work assignments and direction regarding work methods, procedures and schedules from either the Transportation Coordinator and/or the Mobility Manager. Arriving at and departing from pickup and discharge points at scheduled times. Reading installation maps and judges road/traffic conditions to determine the shortest and safest route. Enforcing passenger safety and seatbelt use. Using multiple variations of Mobile Data Computer (MDC) in and out of the vehicles for assigned trips and duties daily. Loading and unloading patients and medical supplies. Performing operator maintenance such as checking fluid levels and air pressure in tires, cleaning and washing of vehicles, and performing inspection checklists to ensure safe and proper operation. Maintaining records and document actions, such as operator inspection checklists/forms and accident/incident reports. Using two-way radios (or other device) to maintain communications with dispatcher/supervisor on assignments and locations. Possessing Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with passenger endorsement is required for the position. Performs other related duties as assigned. DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received. Work Schedule: Full-Time, Monday - Friday, Rotating Shifts are 4:30am to 1:00pm, 5:30am to 2:00pm, 7:00am to 3:30pm, 9:00am to 5:30pm, 10:30am to 6:00pm, and 11:30am to 8:00pm.

Physical Requirements: The incumbent must possess the physical qualifications required to secure an operator's permit; the ability to sit and drive for long periods of time; the coordination required to operate the stated types of vehicles; and the ability to perform some lifting of material. Physical effort is required in reaching, bending, turning or moving hands, arm, feet and legs to operating hand and foot control of vehicles. Moderate effort is required in the frequent handling of objects up to and occasionally more than 50 pounds while loading and unloading cargo. Incumbent will assist and load wheelchair and stretcher patients in and out of patient transport vehicles. VA facilities must make reasonable accommodation for the physical or mental limitations of an applicant or employee who is a qualified person with a disability unless the accommodation would impose an undue hardship on the department or agency. Working Conditions: Is required to work under various weather and road conditions, the incumbent is required to operate vehicle on highways and street in all kinds of weather often for extended periods of time on long trips. The incumbent may be called back to work after working hours or on weekends to make emergency trips; exposure to dust and automotive fumes while operating vehicles; exposure to traffic accidents; and exposure to mental and isolation type patients and employees.
