As an Electro-Optical Sensor Systems (Laser Engineer) and Technical Lead in the Laser and Electro-Optics Branch at Goddard Space Flight Center, you will support the development of an Ultra-Violet (UV) laser sub-system for mass spectrometer based missions. Your responsibilities will include the development, design, construction, and testing of new concepts and technologies for future generation lasers, optical detectors, and electro-optic instruments for space applications.
Duties
Supports applications, planning, and development of state-of-the-art, laser-based concepts, designs, and systems.
Provides technical management expertise formulating, monitoring, and reporting laser and electro-optical system development plans with the goal of meeting performance requirements within cost and schedule constraints.
Provides expertise to develop space flight lasers and electro-optics systems with state-of-the-art optical and electronics instrumentation.
Performs work involving research and development related to electro-optical devices, sensors, and sensor systems in the spectral range from the x-ray to the millimeter region.
Documents and reports findings in the form of new technology reports, potential patents, journal publications, and conference presentations
Provides expertise to develop ultra-violet wavelength laser systems for space flight mass spectrometry applications.
Uses electro-optical techniques, components, systems, and devices for the generation, detection, or processing of electromagnetic energy in the infrared, visible, and ultraviolet (UV) spectrum for aerospace measurement and sensor applications.

Qualifications
In addition to the Basic Education Requirement (in the Education section below), to qualify for this position you must meet the requirements below and have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade, which has equipped you with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.
NASA utilizes OPM-approved qualification and rating requirements specific for Aerospace Technology (AST) positions which recognizes NASA's unique aerospace work. The specific qualifications and minimum education requirements are further described below and within the education section of the job announcement.
To qualify for GS-14, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 level:
Working with laser and electro-optic technology in two or more of the following areas: pump diodes, fiber, lasers, amplifiers, microchip lasers, solid state lasers, nonlinear frequency conversions, lidar detectors, electronics instrumentation, measurement automation, conducting data analysis, optical alignment, developing hardware, integrating and testing laser and electro-optics for airborne or spaceborne instrument systems;
Testing laser and electro-optical systems for use in space environments such as UV lasers for mass spectroscopy;
Developing and managing technical requirements for laser and electro-optical projects.

Education
Basic Education Requirement: You must have successfully completed a bachelor's degree with a major in one of the following:
a) Engineering from a college or university that has ABET accredited engineering programs
b) Physical Science, Mathematics, Life Science or other field of Science
c) Computer Science that included 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours of course work in any combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science with at least half of those hours in mathematics and statistics courses that included differential and integral calculus; and that provided an in-depth knowledge of theoretical and practical applications of computer science, including digital computer system architecture and system software organization, the representation and transformation of information structures, and the theoretical models for such representations and transformations.
If you did not complete a qualifying bachelor's degree, you may be eligible if you have obtained a graduate degree in an AST qualifying field, as listed above.
Degrees in engineering technology are
not considered qualifying for this position.
