You will serve as a ENGINEER or SCIENTIST in the SUBMARINE SYSTEMS ENGINEERING BRANCH of NAVUNSEAWARCENDIV NEWPORT RI. You will serve as the Lead Systems Engineer for the Submarine Acoustic Systems project (Virginia (VA) and Columbia (CLB) class).
This position is part of the Warfare Centers Personnel Demonstration Project. The ND-4 pay band encompasses positions equivalent to GS-12 & GS-13. The ND-5 pay band encompasses positions equivalent to GS-14 & GS-15.
Duties
You will serve as the Lead Systems Engineer for the Submarine Acoustic Systems project (Virginia (VA) and Columbia (CLB) class).
You will be responsible for a variety of tasks involving the research, design, and development of complex state-of-the-art electronic equipment and systems.
You will support the Submarine Acoustic Systems (VA and CLB) leads, department heads, or program managers through their responsibility of the technical integrity of all products delivered.
You will provide technical leadership to a diverse team of government and contractor employees in the design and acquisition process, including analysis, requirements definition, performance verification, and system certification.
You will lead cross-disciplinary/organization teams to resolve engineering issues found in plant, shipyard, or at sea, ensuring thorough analysis assessments are conducted and solutions are executed with satisfactory system performance.
You will ensure technical coordination across SONAR related projects from multiple Program Offices (e.g. PMS401, PMS450E, PMS397E), including commonality efforts between the Virginia and Columbia classes.
You will participate in the development of the latest Technology Insertion (TI) hardware baseline and the associated advanced processer build (APB) software, which contains the latest functionality for integration.
You will be required to demonstrate experience with acoustic propagation, noise characteristics and boundary interactions as they relate to development of
analysis products.
You will develop and maintain professional relationships internal and external to Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) Newport, RI Division at senior levels.
You will be required to present project status and engineering analysis briefings to high-level personnel from the various Program Offices, NUWC leadership, and contractor organizations.

Qualifications
This is an interdisciplinary position and may be filled by a Mechanical Engineer (0830-series), a Computer Engineer (0854-series), an Electronics Engineer (0855-series), a Mathematician (1520-series), or a Computer Scientist (1550-series) depending upon the qualifications of the candidate. For the ND-5: In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the ND-4 pay band (GS-12/13 equivalency) in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: as a professional engineer or scientist leading the execution or direction of submarine acoustic or sonar systems projects to support development efforts, research, integration, or technology efforts for undersea warfare systems.
For the ND-4: In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the ND-3 pay band (GS-9/11 equivalency) in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: as a professional engineer or scientist applying systems engineering principles to support submarine acoustic or sonar systems project development or integration or technology efforts for undersea warfare systems.

Successful completion of a professional engineering degree. To be acceptable, the program must: (1) lead to a bachelor's degree (or higher) in a school of engineering with at least one program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET); or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics. Such education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position.

Basic Requirements:

The total course work in either A or B above must have included differential and integral calculus and, in addition, four advanced mathematics courses requiring calculus or equivalent mathematics courses as a prerequisite.
For the Computer Science 1550 Series:
Bachelor's degree in computer science or bachelor's degree with 30 semester hours in a combination of mathematics, statistics, and computer science. At least 15 of the 30 semester hours must have included any combination of statistics and mathematics that included differential and integral calculus.
All academic degrees and course work must be from accredited or pre-accredited institutions.
