This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Major Range Test Facility Base (MRTFB) to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. About the Position: This Electrician position is with the Directorate of Public Works, WSMR, NM, Duty Location Socorro New Mexico

Duties

Serve as an Electrician engaged in installing, modifying, repairing, troubleshooting (tracing and locating defects), loading, and testing new and existing electrical lines, circuits, systems, fixtures, controls and equipment. Responsible for completing installations, modifications, repairs and testing of systems, circuits, equipment and controls. Plan and lay out routing, placement and arrangement of system circuits, controls and equipment Arrange and install various gauges, sizes, and types of wire, conduit, couplings, fittings, relays, boxes, circuit breakers, and other electrical devices in ways that ensure proper and safe operation of systems, circuits, and equipment. Interpret and apply building plans, blueprints, wiring diagrams, and engineering drawings and use formulas basic to the trade to figure voltage and resistance. Use of hand tools and a wide variety of test equipment for example, wire cutters and strippers, drills, soldiering irons, screwdrivers, test meters, test lamps, voltmeters, aumeters, wattmeters, and ohmmeters.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position requires the incumbent to work in all types of weather conditions.
  • This position requires the incumbent to wear steel toe safety shoes and/or lineman boots, safety glasses, hard hat, and other safety gear as the work assignments dictate.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 20 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Electrician ~ without more than normal supervision. Installing insulators, bending and cutting conduit, calculating voltage and current; and utilizing building plans, blueprints or wiring diagrams to safely plan the layout, routing, placement, type, size, gauge, balance, and load of electrical lines, circuits, or systems. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Physical Effort: The incumbent makes repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding and platforms and where the parts of the systems worked on are in hard-to-reach places. This requires the employee to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. The employee frequently lifts, carries, and sets up tools, equipment, and parts that weigh up to 20 pounds. Occasionally lifts and carries items that weigh over 20 pounds. Working Conditions: The work is done inside and outside and is usually dirty, dusty and greasy. The employee is sometimes required to make repairs and installations outside in bad weather and in work areas that are noisy. Occasionally exposed to the possibility of broken bones, electrical shock, and burns. Frequently exposed to the possibility of cuts and bruises. Work requires the wearing of steel toe safety shoes and of lineman boots, safety glasses, hard hat, and other safety gear as the work assignments dictate.
