This is a Lead Medical Technician, position located at Central Alabama Veterans Health Care System in Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service. The primary purpose of this position is to lead the work of other medical technicians performing blood collection procedures by venipuncture techniques.
Duties
The Lead Medical Technician may rotate through various areas locations within the health care system, giving support and training.
Major duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Phlebotomy duties including collecting, accessioning, and processing patient specimens to be sent to the main hospital laboratory for testing.
Distribute and balance the workload among employees in accordance with established workflow, assure timely completion of the assigned workload, and assure that each employee has enough work to keep busy.
Keep in touch with the status and progress of work and make day- to- day adjustments in accordance with established priorities.
Obtain assistance from the supervisor on problems that may arise, such as backlogs which cannot be resolved promptly.
Instruct employees in specific tasks and job techniques and make available written instructions, reference materials and supplies.
Give on the job training to new employees in accordance with established procedures and practices.
Maintain a current knowledge and answer questions of other employees on procedures, policies, directives, etc. and obtain needed information or decisions from supervisor on problems that arise.
Monitor area physical facilities (ventilation and lighting) and equipment to ensure a safe, clean, presentable work environment.
Inform patients of available services and employee activities.
Resolve simple, informal complaints of employees and refer others to supervisor.
Performing other duties as assigned.
DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.
Work Schedule: Monday thru Friday 7:00am-3:30 pm or 7:30am-4:00pm when assigned to work at the Ft. Novosel laboratory location.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 09/30/2025.
Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-6 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-5. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.
This position includes a Selective Placement Factor (skill, knowledge, ability or other worker characteristic basic to - and essential for - satisfactory performance of the job). Selective Placement Factors are a prerequisite to appointment and represent minimum requirements for a position. Applicants who do not meet it are ineligible for further consideration.
The Selective Placement Factor for this position is: Experience performing phlebotomy/blood draws on human patients.
IN ADDITION TO THE SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR: You must possess at least one year of specialized experience that equipped you with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position, and that is typically in or related to the work of this Medical Technician position. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-5 grade level in the Federal Service. Specialized experience includes: (a) Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic, and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled. Additional specialized experience includes: knowledge of medical technology, microbiology, and molecular microbiology pathology principles, practices, and concepts including theories and techniques applicable to a wide range of duties in microbiology and molecular pathology; knowledge of clinical laboratory instrumentation and the ability to operate, calibrate, and perform preventive maintenance on complex equipment systems. You must have successfully completed one-half year (9 semester hours) of graduate level education in subjects directly related to the position. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business or technical school, junior college, college or university for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. Physical Requirements: The work requires some physical exertion, such as regular and recurring walking or bending to observe, collect, or record data. In the laboratory, there may be special requirements for agility or dexterity such as exceptional hand/eye coordination.
