This position is located at the Oklahoma City VA Health Care System, Environmental Management. The work involves receiving, sorting, and marking soiled linen and apparel; processing flatwork and rough dry items; assembling and issuing clean laundry.
Duties
Major duty include but are not limited to:
Knowledge of general hospital textile care work procedures
Knowledge of operating commercial laundry tumble dryers, flat work ironer, cross folders, stacker conveyor belts and small folders
Determines proper storage of supplies and equipment
Linen Distribution
Knowledge and ability to perform daily and/or routine maintenance requirements of laundry machinery - i.e. cleaning interior and exterior lint traps on dryers, installing and adjusting ironer aprons and ribbon, waxing ironer, cleaning ironer hood, blowing and vacuuming lint away from ironer motor covers and cleaning interior and exterior of dryers
Removing soiled linen from ward areas or clinics using the proper collection methods for handling possible contaminated items.
Ability to meet daily production quotas and ensuring that established quality standards for items processed are upheld
Keeping equipment clean and properly stored when not in use
Follows sanitation and infection control procedures to prevent the spread of bacteria
Utilizes appropriate cleaning chemicals and cleaning method procedures
Knowledge of and ability to safely operate heat-seal type machinery (for example, Thermopatch and Perma-Print Machines in order to repair and mark health care linens and wearing apparel
Delivers clean linen from textile care and delivers linens to using areas either responding to emergency needs and/or on a regular route
Adheres to information security laws, regulations and VA policy
Demonstrates correct methods and compliance with safety standards, policies, procedures and guidelines
Follows regulations on the separation, segregation, storage, transportation and disposal of all medical wastes and ensures compliance with Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Department of Transportation (DOT) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations
Adheres to wearing required personal protective equipment (PPE)
Read and follow posted care and maintenance instructions through signs and pictures.
Ensure use of the appropriate wash formula based on item type being processed.
Work Schedule: Full-Time, Thursday thru Monday, 7:00am-3:30pm

Physical Requirements: Workers must stand or walk continuously on concrete floors. While they do not usually have to keep pace with machines, they need a certain amount of quickness in hand and arm movements to meet production standards. Most of the jobs require workers to frequently lift bundles weighing up to 25 pounds; however in receiving and shipping, occasional lifting of bulk bundles weighing over 30 pounds is required.
Working Conditions: Laundries are extremely noisy and usually hot and humid. Workers are exposed to the possibility of bruises from carts or machinery. If required to sort laundry from patients with contagious diseases, workers wear protective masks, gloves, and gowns. When working in the receiving area the employee may be exposed to drafts from open doors.
