The position is located in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA), South Central VA Health Care Network (VISN 16), Facilities Management Service Line, Maintenance and Operations Team, Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center, Houston, TX (MED VAMC).

Duties

Major duties and responsibilities include but not limited to: Install, maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and calibrate electronic controls and indicating and recording systems throughout the medical center related to HVAC, boiler and chiller plant equipment. Perform preventive and corrective maintenance. Design, major repairs, minor improvements, and modifications to existing equipment and structure. Write plans, layouts, sketches, and estimates of time and materials for assigned repairs, preventive maintenance and minor improvements. Troubleshoots highly complex systems of electronic sensing and control, such as the Metasys Extended Architecture system. Operates, maintains and modifies to optimize efficiency and energy savings, while maintaining environmental functions, i.e., temperature, humidity, ventilation and fire & smoke damper at proper levels for patient care and other facility operations. Design programs, troubleshoot, diagnose, replace, repair and evaluate this system and its subsystems and components by use of multi-meters, manometers, temperature sensors, hygrometers, anemometers, logic diagrams, as-built electronic control drawings, electronic schematics and manufacturer's literature. Analyze a failure and define the precise cause and distinct location of the failure in the subsystems. Use programming skills to analyze, edit and test proprietary programming language for these multiple systems as well as an excellent working knowledge of networking architecture. Cuts, brazes and solders piping, wiring and circuit boards. Review construction plans, verifies their correctness and provides feedback regarding building automation controls consistency and ease of maintenance, and expandability. Provide innovative ideas to reduce energy usage through awareness of energy conservation measures and an excellent command of the various control system programming and software tools. Make recommendations or suggestions and presents them to the supervisor for final approval and action. Work Schedule: Tuesday - Saturday, Midnight - 8:30 am, subject to change based on the needs of the Agency Position Description Title/PD#: Electronic Industrial Controls Mechanic/PD03897A Physical Requirements: Work assignments require moderate physical effort. Regular duties require work in cramped, hot, humid, and otherwise unpleasant surroundings. Work is done from ladders and scaffolding, as well as in crawl spaces and mechanical equipment rooms. Work requires frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping, crawling kneeling, and climbing. It requires the frequent lifting and carrying of weights up to 50 pounds. The incumbent is required to climb and work in high places. There is frequent exposure to the possibility of bums, scrapes, and cuts. Exposure often requires the wearing of personal protective equipment like gloves, face shields, hard hats, glasses, welding hoods, and leathers. Work area is often loud, dirty, dusty, and greasy.
