About the Position: Sierra Army Depot is located in Herlong CA, a rural town in Northern California. Herlong is approximately 60 miles north of Reno, NV, and 35 miles south of Susanville, CA. The depot serves as an Army Expeditionary Logistical Support Center. Employees work Mon-Thurs, 0630-1700 hrs. Youth Facilities and childcare available. Mass transportation is available at minimal cost. Surrounding area boasts a full range of outdoor sports/recreation activities.
Duties
Safely receive, store, move, and tally a variety of material including hazardous and toxic substances in accordance with facility and regulatory requirements.
Use material handling equipment to lift loads weighing 10,000 pounds or more that are higher than 168 inches.
Operate motor vehicles under 26,000 pounds that may be equipped with air brakes.
Use a variety of equipment preservation techniques to preserve parts, surfaces, and equipment from corrosion and deterioration.
Determine the material, containers and devices needed to prepare the full range of standard and specialized materials and equipment for custom packing, shipment, or storage.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Term employment is subject to a one year trial period. Employees serving a trial period can be removed with limited appeal rights.
- This is a term position not to exceed 2 years. This appointment may be extended in increments of 2 years to a maximum of 8 years. Extensions are not guaranteed and are contingent upon budget and workload.
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
- This position has a requirement to lift up to 40 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
- This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 5% of the time.
- This position requires the employee to use personal protective equipment provided by the employer.
- Employee must possess the applicable license(s) or authorization(s) to operate assigned vehicles.
- Position is subject to realignment/movement within the Mission organization due to changing mission requirements.

This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Domestic Defense Industrial Base (DIB) & Major Range and Test Facilities Base (MRTFB) to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Materials Handler (Direct Hiring Authority) ~ without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform common Materials Handler duties receiving, storing, and moving a variety of material. I can use material handling equipment to receive or move material; verify prepared documents for shipping. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
Physical Effort: Incumbents regularly stand on hard surfaces for extended periods of time. Constant kneeling, crouching, bending, stooping and walking are required. Works in tiring and uncomfortable positions, and in close quarters. Frequently lift and move equipment, components, or material weighing up to 40 pounds. Heavier items are lifted with weight handling equipment or with assistance from other workers. Incumbent may climb in, on, and under vehicles and other large mechanized equipment.
Working Conditions: Work is performed inside or outside in areas that may be hot, camp, cold, drafty, or poorly lighted. Incumbent is exposed to the possibility of cuts, scrapes, bruises, abrasions, falls, and injury from falling stock or mechanized work areas. May be subject to exposure of hazardous material. May require wearing protective clothing such as hardhats, hard hats, gloves, masks, etc. Steel toed shoes are always required.
