This position is located in Alaska Regional Office in the Natural Resources Division. Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis. You will work from approximately early March through late October, and you will be in a non-pay status for the remainder of the year (November through February).

Duties

This Geologist, GS-1350-12, position performs scientific work of marked difficulty, exercising independent judgment in support of the National Park Service and serves as a source of expertise to other scientists or program specialists, resolving and evaluating issues that impact scientific projects and programs. Major duties include: Serving as the contaminated mine sites federal lead to assure the assessment, planning, and cleanup are consistent with Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA), Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), National Oil and Hazardous Substances Pollution Contingency Plan (NCP), and NPS applicable or relevant policies, regulations, and laws. Interfacing with staff, superintendents, directorate, DOI solicitors, contractors, National Park Services Contaminants Cleanup Branch, and public stakeholders to establish the overall vision and plan for the site's desired future conditions. Serving as a Contractors Officer Representative for (COR) FAC-COR Level II on complex, multi-year contracts for assessing and remediating contaminated abandoned mineral land (AML) sites. Manages and oversees the activities of the contractors on complex sampling and remediation actions. Providing support for parks evaluating abandoned mineral land (AML) sites throughout the Alaska Region for environmental and physical hazards and works with national AML coordinators to fund projects and park managers to implement AML projects; documents AML site status; assesses mitigation needs; and maintains a regional database of AML sites. Providing technical support on various projects for Alaska parks related to geology, hydrogeology, paleontology, active mining, oil and gas development, erosion control, geohazards, and other related activities.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-10/07/2024-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. For current Federal employees, if hours worked per week are not included on your resume, you must submit a non-award SF-50 for each federal position listed as part of your application to be used to validate your work schedule and determine the amount of qualifying experience that you will be granted. An award SF-50 will not be acceptable documentation for which to consider your amount of qualifying experience. For all other applicants who are not current federal employees, your resume must state either "full-time" (or "40 hours a week") or "part-time" with the number of hours worked per week to ensure proper crediting of specialized experience. Failure to adequately provide information needed to determine number of hours worked in each position may result in that time not being credited when evaluating qualifying experience. For periods of time that reflect military service, the DD-214 or Statement of Service is sufficient to meet the full and/or part-time hours requirement as the service dates will be reflected. To qualify for this position at the GS-12 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following basic requirements for the Geology Series, 1350: Degree: Must have a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in geology, plus 20 additional semester hours in any combination of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological science, structural, chemical, civil, mining or petroleum engineering, computer science, planetary geology, comparative planetology, geophysics, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, physical geography, marine geology, and cartography. You must include a copy of your transcripts. -or- Combination: Must have a combination of education and experience - course work as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. You must include a copy of your transcripts. -AND- In addition to meeting at least one of the basic requirements listed above, to qualify for this position at the GS-12 grade level, you must possess the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as managing remediation associated with abandoned mineral lands (AML); addressing safety hazards associated with AML sites; and applying Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) regulations for remediation of contaminated AML sites.
