Incumbent is assigned to Grounds and Transportation Section in Clinical Engineering Service. This section is responsible for fulfilling all grounds maintenance, snow removal and fleet needs in support of the Saginaw VA Medical Center. Incumbent receives work assignments from and is under the supervision of Grounds and Transportation Supervisor, Facilities Management Service. Incumbent assigns grounds work, vehicle, and equipment maintenance tasks to tractor operators.

Duties

Major duties of this position will include, but are not limited to: Incumbent assigns grounds work, vehicle, and equipment maintenance tasks to tractor operators. Work Leader is the dedicated facility trainer on all equipment for grounds and logistics staff and responsible for conducting training and maintaining training records. Provide technical expertise and control in the scheduling, execution, and timely reporting of all equipment and fleet vehicle maintenance and utilization. Incumbent's work affects the quality and timeliness outcomes of direct and indirect patient care and support activities, particularly during the inclement weather of the winter months when snow removal can become a dominant issue. Independently utilizes a thorough knowledge of grounds procedures. In the day-to-day operations of the unit, he/she takes actions necessary in the support of a wide range of VA programs. Accurately utilizes skills to post/document daily activities vehicle data. Assuring needed scheduling the of the work assignments for the Grounds Section are available to all employees as well as any other instructions received from the Supervisor. The incumbent must, at times, makes minute by minute scheduling adjustments to meet the needs of patient care activities and safety concerns. Entering and closing work order requests (in a timely manner) as they relate to the function of the Grounds Unit. Function as the unit Contracting Officer's Representative maintaining all assigned contracts and coordinating maintenance activities for grounds equipment and fleet assets. Provides input to management relating to contract scope of work and material quotes to complete management decision making processes. Responsible for assigning work overseeing tractor operators in operating a forklift used in lifting and moving materials and machinery, Bob Cat Tool Cats, and all hydraulic attachments, 105+ hp tractors and attachments including power takeoff (PTO), 1-ton pickup trucks with snowplows, UTV's, power lawn equipment, and some spraying equipment used in spraying trees, lawns, and bushes. Assist in the removal of snow; operates 40' aerial boom lift vehicle; occasionally operates dump trailers; may be required to assist the tractor-operator, when necessary. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Incumbent must always be alert to prevent accidents when operating equipment. Much of the grounds work is performed in early/late hours and in all kinds of weather. Position requires heavy lifting (50-80pounds), pushing and pulling as necessary to load/unload patient supplies and materials. Incumbent will ensure safety precautions are always maintained by tractor operators by continually reviewing safety operating procedures and PPE requirements.
