About the Position: Fort Drum, the home of the 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), is located in Northern New York. Fort Drum is approximately 30 miles from Canada, with the Great Lakes to the west, the Adirondack Mountains to the east, and the St. Lawrence River and Thousand Islands in between.

Duties

Installs, repairs, and performs preventive maintenance on heating, ventilation, and air conditioning equipment (HVAC) for an agency. Checks for the probability of leaks by visible and audible examination of equipment components by applying prescribed procedures Install, diagnose, overhaul, and repair electronic control systems by running wire, mounting thermostats, receiver boards, and cutting resisters in board to code customized needs. Repair or replace switches, motors, fuses, fans, belts, and wiring for assigned areas. Utilize meters and gauges in order to make appropriate adjustments to fuel and air flow. Operates a government-owned motor vehicle on/off post to complete work request and/or orders.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 5% of the time.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 80 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.
  • This position requires rotating shifts to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • This position requires the employee to use personal protective equipment provided by the employer.

Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal SupervisionAbility to Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprint reading)Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and EquipmentKnowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc.Knowledge of MaterialsTechnical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic)Use of Measuring Instruments PHYSICAL EFFORT: The incumbent handles and carries tools, equipment and testing devices that weigh 80 pounds or less. The work is normally performed at sites where most of the equipment can be reached from the floor or from ladders. However, occasional platforms and scaffolding are needed to reach parts of the systems such as fans, electrical and waterlines, and duct work. The incumbent is required to stoop, stretch, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. WORKING CONDITIONS: Most of the work is done indoors, but the incumbent is frequently subject to uncomfortable temperature changes, dusty and dirty conditions, and small confined places while working on equipment. There is also occasional work performed outside and on the tops of buildings. The incumbent is subject to cuts, burns, electrical shocks and respiratory ailments. Exposure to repented refrigerant gases may cause toxic effects to eyes, skin, and internal organs. Use of safety equipment such as safety shoes, protective breathing apparatus, hearing protection, eye protection, gloves, and hats is required.
