This position is located in the Nutrition and Food Services at the Atlanta Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Decatur, GA, which is responsible for providing meals and nutritional care to Veteran patients. The primary purpose of the WG-4 Cook is to perform a variety of duties that are primarily concerned with food preparation.
Duties
Duties to include but not limited to the following:
Prepares simple uncooked food items such as, salads, gelatin, fruit desserts.
Prepares appropriate quantity of foods for tray line service utilizing computer generated lists.
Prepare simple cooked food such as breakfast items, sauces, gravies, and soups.
Maintain food safety through understanding of the temperature danger zone, clean vs sanitize, expiration dates, and labeling prepared foods.
Understand the difference between chopped, diced, sliced shredded, blend, mix and combine ingredients.
Cleans and maintains high levels of sanitation in work area to include kitchen tools and equipment.
Cool and store foods in appropriate manner, following food safety standards for time and temperature, labeling, and storage.
Follow the FIFO (First In First Out) method when pulling and storing food product.
Utilizes standardized recipes or follows oral instructions.
Place appropriate menu items on meal trays based on diet profile.
Interpret and follow computer generated lists, to include standing orders, diet activity and food preferences.
Distinguish ticket errors for modified diets.
Safely use kitchen equipment such as knives, blenders, food processors, meat slicers, ovens, grill, stove, steamer, kettle, etc.
Monitor and record food temperature, ensuring food safety.
Utilize proper chemicals when completing cleaning tasks.
Use and maintain kitchen equipment such as ovens, grills, kettles, toasters, etc.
Work Schedule: 6:00am - 2:30pm, including weekends and holidays. Hours subject to change based on the needs of the agency.

Physical Requirements: Is subject to continuous standing, walking, frequent bending, reaching, pushing, and pulling. Lifts or moves objects weighing up to 40 lbs. unassisted and occasionally lifts or moves objects weighing more than 40 lbs. with assistance of a lifting device or other workers. Manipulates cumbersome, heavy objects, such as washing stainless steel mixing bowls, pushing heavy carts on casters or operating heavy equipment. Possesses manual dexterity to operate equipment and to handle sharp knives and blades safely. Utilizes eye-hand coordination and the ability to concentrate and react quickly to serve food and operate equipment.
