The Battle Creek VA Medical Center is recruiting for an Outpatient Pharmacy Technician (Care in the Community). The Outpatient Pharmacy Technician will function in Pharmacy Service at the Battle Creek VA Medical Center.

Evaluates and analyzes workflow and coordinates all work activities involved with Care in the Community prescription processing. This will involve trouble shooting, regularly gathering data, analyzing, and interpreting VA data and formulating action plans. Ability to participate in quality improvement initiatives to improve Care in the Community processes to increase overall quality and safety. Resolves problems and complaints regarding all Care in the Community pharmacy requests, including prescriptions received from unauthorized provider visits through communication with Care in the Community staff and/or non-VA providers when issues arise, alerting appropriate personnel. Has responsibility for the proper handling of Care in the Community pharmacy records. Trains and orients new and existing pharmacy staff, and other medical center staff on proper policy and procedures for Care in the Community prescription workload. Provides data for workload reports and process improvement projects to appropriate supervisors. Thoroughly understands VA Pharmacy procurement as well as the national drug formulary, including local formulary requirements. Thoroughly understands controlled substance policies and procedure. Attends facility and VISN level meetings regarding Care in the Community and provides learned knowledge to the pharmacy staff. Clearly communicates with Pharmacy Procurement when specialty medications need to be ordered to fulfill an approved CITC prescription. Assists in the tracking and shipping of CITC prescribed controlled substances, in addition to all CITC prescribed medication mailed from Battle Creek VA, Wyoming CBOC or Consolidated Mail-Out Pharmacy (CMOP). Receives and reviews faxed, mailed, electronically prescribed, or delivered prescriptions written by non-VA providers, documenting all received prescriptions in the electronic health record (EHR). Responsible to communicate with CITC approved providers non-formulary/prior authorization concerns, medication change requests, and when seeking clarification on prescriptions. Responsible to keep patients updated on the status of CITC prescriptions, documenting communication appropriately within the EHR. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency: Pharmacy Technician candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed as authorized by 38 U.S.C. § 7403(f) Certification. For positions above the full performance level, the employee must pass a national certification exam and hold an active national certification through either: (a) PTCB as a CPhT. OR (b) NHA as a ExCPT. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: Pharmacy Technician, GS-08 Experience. Candidates must possess one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-07) and demonstrate the KSAs below Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs). In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs for all GS-08 assignments and meet any additional KSAs for the assignment, if indicated: (a) Comprehensive knowledge of concepts, principles, methodology and policies in a specialized area or section of pharmacy (such as sterile compounding, controlled substances, automation, clinical pharmacy, contact center, etc.) Note: See Specialized Area.in the Definitions Section. (b) Skill in training and orienting new and existing pharmacy facility employees and students on proper policies and procedures. (c) Ability to evaluate, analyze and coordinate workflow and work activities within a specialized area or section of the pharmacy. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is GS-8. Physical Requirements: The work requires regular and recurring physical exertion, involving standing or sitting for prolonged periods of time, typing, walking distances within the medical center, lifting/carrying (up to 40 pounds) of pharmaceutical supplies, and bending/stooping/stretching. Position requires the ability to read fine print on labels, depth perceptions, ability to distinguish basic colors, hearing (aid permitted), clear speech, and emotional stability.
