This position is part of the National Archives and Records Administration, serving in organizational units within the Office of Research Services. Incumbents perform work supporting access to archival holdings and physical and intellectual control over records. Work may include reference services support; pull and refile; monitoring; holdings maintenance; processing; description; digitization; reformatting records; transfer, accessioning or disposition of records; and other customer services.

Duties

The following are the duties of this position at the GS-07. If you are selected at a lower grade level, you will have the opportunity to learn to perform all these duties, and will receive training to help you grow in this position. As an Archives Technician, you will support the functions of your unit. You may: Provide reference support services including pulling and refiling, interfiling, copying, scanning, redactions, and monitoring. Maintain up to date knowledge regarding a variety of filing systems and the large and complex variety of records series within NARA. Perform processing, arrangement, holdings maintenance, and/or holdings security tasks according to established criteria. Perform detailed and complex work following a plan (or general guidance). Create technical and descriptive metadata. Assist and prepare general description work and online catalog descriptions according to NARA lifecycle standards, policies, and procedures. Participate in the digitization efforts of archival holdings for public access and permanent retention following broad NARA guidance and procedures. Prepare records for digitization. Assist in accessioning and disposal of all record types under the guidance of an archivist or archives specialist. Review information about records prior to making them available to researchers, ensuring that access restrictions are being followed. Evaluate the physical condition of records in the course of other duties and alert designated staff to condition problems that limit access or threaten safety of records. Assist archivists with preservation and rehabilitation projects. Use available tools and software to verify electronic records in a variety of moderately complex formats. Perform validation tasks, such as virus scanning, copying files to local storage from media, and establishing intellectual control of records. Perform electronic file format conversion for preservation, following a plan provided by an archivist. Upload archival holdings to approved storage for preservation.

Qualifications

You must meet the following requirements by the closing date of this announcement. Specialized Experience: For the GS-06, you must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized Experience for this position includes: Communicating with and responding to inquiries from customers, verbally and in writing; AND Following, referencing, and applying policy and procedures to accomplish work assignments; AND Performing research to identify information relevant to a work assignment. Specialized Experience: For the GS-05, you must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized Experience for this position includes: Communicating with and responding to inquiries from customers, verbally and/or in writing; AND Following and/or referencing policy and procedures to accomplish work assignments. OR You may substitute education for specialized experience as follows: 4 years above high school OR You may qualify by a combination of experience and education. NOTE: Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours (i.e., beyond the second year) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. One full academic year of study (30 semester hours) beyond the second year is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experience.
