About the Position: This position is with the U.S Army Sustainment Command, 404th Army Field Support Brigade, Logistics Readiness Center, located in JBLM, WA.

Duties

Serves as the crew member in charge of depot train crew. Insures that braker/switchers are properly placed and follow pertinent regulations, instructions, and requirements. Observes all railroad traffic and safety laws. Implement procedures for special handling of cargo under a variety of conditions. Operate motor vehicles with a gross vehicle weight up to 10,000 pounds. Direct the safe operation of a 120-ton diesel-electric locomotive.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. This position is subject to a pre-employment drug screening, and random testing thereafter.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 45 pounds in the regular performance of duties.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 10% of the time.
  • This position may require the incumbent to work shift work during rail operation which may include coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations.
  • The incumbent must possess or have the ability to obtain Locomotive Engineer/Conductor Certification within one year of entry into the position.
  • The incumbent must possess or have the ability to obtain Railway Operations Crewmembers Civilian Certification within one year of entry into the position.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one-year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.

May lift and carry items weighing up to 45 lbs. frequently over railroad ties and ballast. Working Conditions: Work is performed around the locomotive, railcars, roadbed, tracks and when loading or unloading equipment. Frequently is exposed to adverse weather conditions or extreme temperatures; expose to fumes, dust and odors from diesel exhaust and treated ties, noise from operating locomotive and horn. Subject to possible serious injury or death from train derailment; from falling while boarding, walking, standing, or railcar movements; while walking on ties, or loose roadbeds; coupling or uncoupling and air-line devices. Personal protective equipment will be worn at all times during exposure to hazardous conditions while working as a conductor, brakeman or locomotive engineer.
