This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.

These Nursing position is located in the Nursing, Acute Care Section, at the Orlando VAHCS main facility. The Registered Nurse (Critical Care) will report directly to the Critical Care Section Nurse Manager or designee.
The Critical Care RN is responsible for providing competent, evidence-based care to assigned patients and oversight of licensed vocational nurses/nursing assistants, as appropriate to the setting. The nurse will assist in directing the provision of nursing education, orientation, competencies and providing quality improvement and outcomes utilization consultation. Demonstrates leadership in delivering and improving holistic care through collaborative strategies with others. Provides direct care for acutely/critically ill patients who are at high risk for actual or potential life-threatening health problems, regardless of the setting for nursing care. Provides high intensity care and vigilance, while refining assessment skills and blending in data obtained from a variety of invasive/noninvasive monitoring technology. Questions clinical practices for the purpose of providing evidence-based care. The RN Critical Care has experience with the situations in which they are ultimately expected to perform, integrating theoretical concepts, strong critical thinking skills, and exhibits a robust technically skilled practice. During each interaction, the RN establishes and maintains a safe, respectful, healing, and caring environment. Nursing care of critically ill Veterans encompasses the dynamic interaction of the patient and his or her family, the nurse, and the environment where care is provided with the goal of ensuring optimal patient outcomes.
The Critical Care RN may also function as or provide coverage for the Rapid Response Nurse (RRN). The RRN utilizes the nursing process to assess, diagnose, plan, implement, and evaluate interventions applied across all inpatient units, demonstrating leadership through mentoring inpatient nursing staff and providing clinical oversight of the Telemetry Health Technicians. The RRN implements the Rapid Response Team protocols to improve the efficiency of patient care in emergency situations and serves as the nursing lead, in collaboration with the medical team, during cardiac arrest/code blue events. This RN completes pro-active rounding, evaluates early warning scores, and communicates with clinical staff to prevent unnecessary transfers, patient decline, and increased morbidity and mortality in the inpatient population. The RRN represents the organization as an institutional quality champion by identifying process issues and gaps in practice and using quality improvement tools to recommend change, fostering an environment of continuous quality improvement through data collection, data interpretation, and action planning. The RRN is a steward of the OVAHCS Infection Control program and assists in the education and enforcement of Infection Control practices throughout the inpatient setting.
The Registered Nurse - Critical Care (ICU) duties include but not limited to:
Ongoing assessment of patients; their responses to interventions described in the plan; critical review and evaluation of available outcome information; and a reformation of diagnoses, interventions, and expected outcomes occur along a continuum of care.
Collaborates with the medical, surgical, and nursing team to ensure the provision of the appropriate level of care for Veterans in the critical care setting.
Restores, supports, promotes, and maintains the physiologic and psychosocial stability of Veterans across lifespans.
Assimilate and prioritize information to take immediate and decisive evidence-based, patient-focused action.
Responds to the unique needs of Veterans and families coping with unanticipated treatment, as well as quality-of-life and end-of-life decisions.
Evaluates practice in an ongoing process, based on best evidence.
Provides peers with informal constructive feedback for improvement.
Fosters a safe and supportive environment conducive to the professional development of healthcare professionals.
Work Schedule: Full time, TOD 0700 - 1930 or 1900-0730, Six 12 - hour shifts and One 8-hour shift per period until completion of orientation and approved by leadership. Then six 12-hour shifts. Weekends, nights and holidays are required.

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7403(f), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English.
Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE); OR Individuals attending a master's level bridge program in nursing who have completed coursework equivalent to a bachelor's level degree in Nursing may have opportunity to become registered as a nurse with a state licensing board prior to completion of the bridge program. Upon achievement of a State license, the individual may be appointed on temporary basis and later converted to a permanent appointment upon successful completion and graduation from the bridge program. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6); OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active, and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing to warrant an appointment as a Nurse who has completed an associated degree/entry level Nursing education program. Credit for foreign nursing education higher that associate degree/entry level requires a formal degree equivalency validation from a recognized equivalency evaluation accepted by VA such as International Consultants of Delaware (ICD).
Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Graduate Nurse Technician (GNT) Exception: Candidates who otherwise meet the basic education requirements, but do not possess the required licensure, may be appointed at the entry step of the grade and level applicable to the completed nursing education as a GNT on a 120-day temporary appointment while actively pursuing licensure (may be extended up to two years on a case-by-case-basis.)
NOTE: Grandfathering Provision - All persons currently employed in VHA in 0610 series and performing the duties as described in the qualification standard on the effective date of the standard (1/29/2024) are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the grade held including positive education and licensure/certification.

Preferred Experience:
2 years or more ICU experience preferred.
CCRN certification preferred.
