This position is located in Yellowstone National Park, in the division of Visitor and Resource Protection.
Duties
Position serves as the Deputy Chief Ranger, directly reporting to the Chief Ranger who leads the Visitor and Resource Protection Division of Yellowstone National Park. This is a large multi-level division that includes law enforcement, emergency services, structural fire, wildland fire, search and rescue, backcountry operations and management, fee collection, and permitting. The Deputy Chief Ranger is responsible for managing the visitor services office, structural fire program, emergency services program, search and rescue program and corrals program. Advises and makes recommendations to the Chief Ranger and Park Superintendent relating to improved utilization of staffing, equipment, and funds. Performs a wide range of supervisory functions including recruiting, hiring, training, and evaluating staff; planning, assigning and reviewing work; setting schedules and priorities; and directing the division safety program. Represents the NPS and the park on multi-agency, DOI and NPS workgroups and committees to achieve program goals.
Physical Demands: Duties and responsibilities require long work days and extensive travel by all modes of transportation. The duties of the position may require considerable physical exertion, especially during emergencies. This position comes under the scope and requirements of the park's mandatory health end fitness program.
Working Conditions: The employee works in a northern mountainous park with fluctuations in temperature from 100 degrees Fahrenheit In the summer to -50 degrees Fahrenheit in the winter. Snow depths during the winter may vary from two to eight feet. Elevation ranges from 5,000 to 11,000 feet. The emotional environment Is often one of high stress. Employee occupies government quarters on federal premises as a condition of employment.
Qualifications

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. For current Federal employees, if hours worked per week are not included on your resume, you must submit a non-award SF-50 for each federal position listed as part of your application to be used to validate your work schedule and determine the amount of qualifying experience that you will be granted. An award SF-50 will not be acceptable documentation for which to consider your amount of qualifying experience. For all other applicants who are not current federal employees, your resume must state either "full-time" (or "40 hours a week") or "part-time" with the number of hours worked per week to ensure proper crediting of specialized experience. Failure to adequately provide information needed to determine number of hours worked in each position may result in that time not being credited when evaluating qualifying experience.
For periods of time that reflect military service, the DD-214 or Statement of Service is sufficient to meet the full and/or part-time hours requirement as the service dates will be reflected.

Must currently hold, or have held within the past 3 years, a full (Type I) NPS Law Enforcement Commission; or be qualified to receive a full NPS Type I Commission by the closing date of this announcement based upon having completed approved NPS training as outlined by policy including: The FLETC Criminal Investigator Training Program, the Natural Resource Police Training (NRPT), Land Management Police Training Program (LMPT), US Park Police Integrated (USPPI), and National Park Ranger Integrated (NPRI).

EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to successfully perform the duties of this position. Examples of specialized experience include leading a complex Visitor and Resource Protection operation encompassing front and back-country law enforcement, jail, emergency medical services, structural fire, wildland fire, dispatch, fee collection, and permitting operations; interpreting regulations and policy directives related to law enforcement and natural resource protection that included evaluating law enforcement program activities based on funding to determine objectives, amount and location of work, as well as the type of resources needed for the program; reviewing law enforcement case reports to ensure compliance with policy; leading complex incident management teams in high-visibility public arenas; advising senior managers and implementing management actions through multiple organizational layers; collaborating with other federal agencies, local governments, and/or non-governmental organizations including through mutual aid agreements; establishing and carrying out management priorities; executing executive leadership or programmatic initiatives; budgeting and financial management of a multi-million dollar program; recruiting, hiring, motivating, and evaluating staff; and representing the National Park Service in public meetings on controversial issues. You must include hours per week worked. Please also include the grade level of any federal positions.
Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
Occupancy of government quarters is required.
If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
You may be required to travel overnight away from home on occasion. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.
Applicants must be at least 21 years old.
